We're trying out a new type of shotgun match. Similar to IPSC shotgun, but designed to be far more accessible and relevant to the "tactical" shotguns that the average Canadian owns. Info below:

What is the Dynamic Shotgun Challenge (DSC)?

The DSC is a practical shooting sport designed to be a more accessible and efficient alternative to IPSC shotgun. Stages are smaller, require minimal movement, and do not require specialized gear or shotguns. With a maximum round count of 6 per stage, all that is required for you to participate is a shotgun with a capacity of at least 5+1 capacity. Short-barreled (18.5" and under) shotguns with or without interchangeable chokes are competitive in this sport. Black Badge is NOT required!

Intended to test real-world practical use of shotguns, DSC is shot exclusively with buckshot and slugs at distances between 10-25m on USPSA targets. Hit factor scoring is used. The sport will challenge your ability to deploy your shotgun from low-ready or by retrieving it before shooting, test your marksmanship at speed, knowledge of your buckshot shot pattern and slug zero, transitions, different shooting positions and fast manipulations. While reloading is permitted, it is never required in DSC level 1 matches.

This sport is intended for you to become more proficient with your shotgun. There are only two divisions, Semi-Auto and Manual, with each division having no restrictions on modifications including but not limited to;
- Aftermarket iron or optical sights
- Aftermarket magazine tubes
- Aftermarket triggers
- Aftermarket bolts
- Aftermarket lifters
- Heat shields
- Barrel porting / muzzle brakes
- Slings
- Aftermarket stocks or handguards
- Side saddles or ammo cards
- Port opening modifications

Stages are posted in the match documents. Any buckshot or slug ammunition that is permitted at BTSA is allowed. All shots will be on paper. All safety rules and range commands will defer to the IPSC rulebook.

Great fun, thanks for the share
Practical shotgun is always a hoot
I like the stage that start sitting in the chair at the cabin and $#it happens outside, nice door kick lol
should start with mt chamber

This is awesome!

Most people with tactical shotguns have side saddles on their guns. You could probably include a few reloads off the gun for future events.
The whole idea for this was to make it as simple and accessible for people as possible. Start with the bare fundamentals. Everyone had enough trouble not hitting the no-shoots that I wanted the shooting to be the primary challenge. Only 1/14 of us had no mikes or no-shoots (and it wasn't me). In the future I may add reloads or a combo buck/slug stage for "level 2" matches.

Good move. The more simple it is the more accessible it is.

Local club ran shotgun matches and as the courses became more elaborate turnout dwindled.

Hard to know for sure as there was a never ending stream of Turdhole bans along the way (which is off putting for a lot of people) and ammo prices just kept climbing but it kinda felt like as the matches got more intense (which the more experienced shooters pushed for and liked) the regular Joe's & Jane's dropped off, maybe they preferred the more laid back courses of fire where they felt they stood more of a chance?

Is the 18½" barrel the max length? I have a 1301 comp 21". This sounds really cool and I hope they have matches in SK

The first rule is that there are no rules. The whole point is to test home defense shotguns in practical scenarios, I only mentioned the 18.5" guns because generally the guys with them get stomped in actual IPSC shotgun.

Put the match on yourself! It's very simple. I'm sure Wes would be happy to help you get started.

That's cool. I'd like to use my 1301 comp 21" and my Benelli SuperNova 14" pump.
