EAL Buckhorn sight variant? With Pics.

I agree I`ve seen a few of them as well.

I consider EAL rifles with serial #s before 1000(+-)? as another variant. As they are configured differently than later ones.

Has anyone else seen or owned an EAL with Winchester buckhorn sight?

I know I've seen a few for sale over the years.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, YES ,,,,, I have one with a Winchester Carbine (ladder) rear sight . It is ser. # 3,2XX.
It is not dovetailed to barrel , but a steel block about 2" long , 3/8" high & 3/8" wide , is soldered to barrel
just ahead of chamber & the sight is dovetailed to this block . I also thought it was back yard gunsmith
although it was a factory looking block . It also has the common 2 ear flip rear sight marked 300 & 400.
The 300 ear is dead on @ 100 with the present ft. sight , as I got it. I got this gun from a retired MNR
employee who used it for bear control in northern Ont.
Stamped on the barrel near this block is ; D & A ( in a circle) . I did not know about EAL rifles when I bought it
but was presently surprised when I found out . ,,,,,,,,, Frank

The small ca mark on my rifle, is on a rifle with no rear barrel sight, only the normal rear flip sight. So it does not have anything to do with the barrel sight. Your rifle`s serial # is also very close to the OP`s so likely something they just did at that time.

Check your rear flip sight again. I`ve never seen a 300/400 rear flip sight. Yours should be either the original EAL 200/400 or 300/600 found on the Lee Enfield.

I have also seen EALs with dovetailed Winchester sights on the barrel and the rear flip sight ears intact. I even saw one that had military base like found on a Lee Enfield or Ross with an Enfield ladder sight.

We are quite sure that EAL did not put install the barrel sights on any of them.

There was a guy here a little while ago selling an EAL with a Williams barrel sight that had the rear sight ears gnawed off, and he insisted it was done by EAL.

I am under the impression that EAL would build rifles to order with many options offered, such as sights, magazines, wood grade etc.

I have seen more than one "sporter model" EAL with well figured wood and even one that was supposedly factory checkered. Very interesting rifles. The only issue with them that I could see was their price in comparison to Sear's, Eaton's, Hudson's Bay, Army Navy, SIR and International Firearms prices on similar rifles. The market was huge for the rifles but the EAL rifles few and far between as well as being expensive.

The reciever was machined out of surplus no4mk1 reciever. As for the plunger hole not being drilled, wrong again. There is a dowel pressed into the hole, easily removed with a small punch.

I have a EAL with the military flip sight on the barrel like Beater posted and a side mount adjustable Lyman sight on the receiver.

Serial number is in the military sequence and a cut mag.

It came from a now deceased retired RCAF Colonel and was given to him on retirement in the late 60's - early 70's the best I recall.

He said that the rifle came from a RCAF Sea King with both sets of sights attached.

He used it for a few years at a hunt camp near Pettawawa.

Way back, when I used to shoot at Winona Range here in Ontario, a Canadian Ranger had one identicle to mine.

His was military sequence serial#, not Ranger sequence and he got it through the Ranger program.

Sad part on mine is that the flip sight was taken off by me years ago to cleanup as it had some surface rust and as you guessed, I lost it.

As I read through this post again I can't help but argue that the reciever for all eal rifles were reworked surplus Longbranch parts, which all had the hole drilled for the rear sight spring and plunger. Easily filled with a dowel machined to fit.

Thanks for this cigar man!

From a Sea King eh? Interesting.

To the best of my knowledge over the years and from the knowledge of an older collector, D. Fabok, Military EAL's where used in Search and Rescue.

This is where the Sea kings come into play.

God, when I think of some of the Milsurps I could have bought from Dan, I cringe.

He not only had experimental Long Branch Snipers and such, but one of the largest collections of Lugers I have ever seen under one roof.

This where my EAL came from, Dan made the connection.

The last time I saw Dan, which was a number of years ago, he had one cheap handgun left to his name.

Whole collection was sold off due to Dan aging.

Is that the fate of us Milsurp Collectors as we get old??????

A rifle left in Sea Kings in perpetuity...you'd suspect they'd get rusty, having been around all of that salty sea air.

I wonder if the current (same) copters, C130's, Buffalos etc. are still firearm equipped and if so with what?
