Ear plugs for hunting

MSR Sordin Supreme Pro-X. $374.60 shipped from SRS Tactical (one of the sponsors)
Are they really pricey? Yes, but at 23 years old, not going deaf from duck/deer/turkey hunting is worth it.
I'd like to be able to hear my kids say "Dad" someday.

This, 1000 times this. They're incredibly comfortable and increase your hearing ability a tenfold.

Most of the "older and more seasoned" guys (like me) probably don't wear them hunting, but in majority , will wear "them" shooting. And I agree, get good quality ones also.

If you can still hear your wife snoring in bed...get better ones.

for those who do not use ear pro all the time old and young.
google tinnitus and listen to some of the "what it sounds like" samples.
when you do imagine what it's like to experience it all day everyday for the rest of your life , then think again about not using ear pro while hunting or shooting, is it worth the risk?

if not get electronic muff they will improve you hearing capability during hunting not reduce it .

once you damage your hearing there is NO going back, there is NO cure and every time you experience a loud sound it adds to the damage. Some may never experience tinnitus but is it worth the chance. I say NO ####ING way!

end rant,

just trying to spread the word of this pain in the ass condition and prevention measures .

Caustic. Some people get that without having damaged their hearing. I have a very mild form of it a mild hissing in my ears cant hear it until it gets quiet. Yet I still have excellent hearing, and can hear things a lot of other people cant.(and yes the sounds are there lol). The singer will I am has this problem. He has said he had it before he started composing/singing. And got into composing because it helps him ignore it.

I hear you...... (Actually, can hardly hear anything.....) I got tinnitus from 44 years of sitting in noisy cockpits and its no fun. Years ago headsets were pure crap but the noise cancelling units nowadays are really nice. Tinnitus is bothersome but can be partially ignored in a lot of everyday activities but when its super quiet, like sitting in a treestand, its like a million bees buzzing in your ears. I use Howard Leigh noise cancelling headsets for shooting and they work really well.

Protect your hearing like caustic says as there's no going back.....

Yep. Was diagnosed with Tinnitus about 10 years ago. Pain in the azz...but most times one gets used to the constant buzzing. I do agree that a good set of hearing protectors should be worn whenever extended shooting is involved. In the field, a matter of choice. My choice for hunting "big game"...I choose not to wear them.

I got tinnitus from: driving a vehicle at highway speeds with windows down, long extended jet boat trips, other high/moderate noise activities, and of course, firing thousands of .38 Special and 9mm rounds with "inadequate" ear protection back in my previous life didn't help either...

As you see, you can get this condition doing "routine" activities also. Can't wear ear protection all the time.

I wear one in my shooting ear. ie gun on my right shoulder, plug in right ear.

Left ear takes the hit for right handed shooters actually, if this hasn't already been pointed out. In my last hearing test they asked "You a hunter?" As there was a missing section on my left ear range wise associated most often with hunters.

I try to use plugs, as I always hunt with a .375 H&H and it barks. I got a pair of those molded earplugs with "B" filters, you hear most normal sounds but the loud stuff doesn't make it through. Very comfortable, very easy to put in.

Electronic this, electronic that, what is the hunting world coming too? What happened to good old hunting skills? Are we that dependent on electronic gadgets to harvest game? Electronic ear protector/listening devices, trail camera's, range finders, bonocular range finders, trigger's, reticles, predator calls, and what else did I miss? I never used any of these things, nor will I.

dude you missed the point, it about saving your hearing.

Electronic ear muffs are what I use. Amplify natural sounds around you but cut out when shooting. I never shoot without hearing protection, even when hunting. I would be curious to know if they make noise cancelling plugs though, might be less cumbersome than full muffs.
X2 on the electronic ear muffs. muffle the boom boom, amplify deer sounds crunching acorns 50 meters away. They also help to keep your ears warm in the cold weather

You will never regret getting and using trail cameras.

I have a range finder which I've never had a reason to use in a hunting situation. It's fun to use to try to learn to estimate distances though. I tend to shoot at pretty close ranges though, I'm no TJ Schwanky...

Definitely, I use Howard Leights and they are fantastic! I haven't been deer hunting but I don't see why they would not work... I've used them while duck, coyote, grouse, and rabbit hunting and if anything they make it easier to hear because they amplify the natural noises and just block out when I take a shot. They also double as ear muffs when it is cold out! For $50-60 it is a great investment that will protect your ears (you only get one pair and they can't be fixed after they are damaged)

Also I have had mine for roughly 2 years now and they are still on the original batteries; I use them a lot!

Nice to hear. Just ordered a pair from amazons.com. Great reviews.

There are also electronic ear plugs (if you didnt like the bulk of muffs) available that amplify regular sound and mute big sounds. I
got a pamphlet on them from a local audiologist but lost it so I cant say the name.
They were $600. - $700 but I would gladly pay just about any price to be rid of this constant
ringing.
PS. My doctor told me tinnitus can be caused by just one loud event - shot...

I wear foam earplugs when I duck hunt, but I don't wear anything when I am out in the woods...I never liked the electronic muffs/plugs, just wasn't the same as my real hearing. I find that when I shoot, my ears only ring for a couple seconds. I always wear plugs AND muffs when shooting at the range.
