The only military rifles I have seen with the early butt are the RCAF survival rifles.

Well, that just goes to show you how different things can be. I had a half dozen of the RCAF survival rifles, complete with canvas cases, which were olive drab in color with a large black RCAF lettering stenciled over the magazine pouch.

All of the rifles were the same as that of the Inuit Rangers in the photos but in much better outside condition. There were no other markings on them to indicate they were RCAF issue and there weren't any on the packing manifest to indicate they were RCAF. Bought them decades back at a dispersal auction, where everything there was supposedly from RCAF warehouses.

EALs are what they are. Lovely little rifles that were a pleasure to carry and shoot. I hunted with one for years, with the Weaver scope and side bases, which at the time I thought "someone" had put on but was later verified to have been issued.

(NB: The top pic is "RCAF survival" and has the protectors on front site. They retain LB serial numbers. The bottom pic is what they are using in the Ranger pic posted above. They have been observed with serial numbers stamped on the receiver which included EAL ie "EAL ###X" and also without EAL ie just "###X")

Any chance you still have a list of the serial numbers you acquired?

They all looked like the pic at the bottom, just like the rifle shown in the hands of the Ranger.

I bought those rifles approximately 35-40 years ago and there's no way I have that manifest.

If I kept all of the manifests, I had from dispersal auctions, I would need an extra room on the house.

If you look carefully at the famous picture below, you will see at least three variants in that rack, including those in your pictures. Different butts, front sights, etc. And I would bet, different rear sights too.

I hadn’t even thought of that. Sometimes the answer is so obvious we don’t see it.
