Well the early goose season has come and gone and what a show it turned out to be. I had to work tuesday through thursday so Whytey was on his own during that time. He and Wynn got onto some birds Thursday and put the slam on their 20 birds in under an hour. Friday saw us all hunting together with a landowner and his son and the 5 of us took another 32. What a great finish to a fantastic 10 day nuisance goose hunt. Made some new friends, hunted with some new and familiar faces and most of all had alot of fun. Whytey's girl Belle earned her keep this past week and she excelled in grand fashion and was an absolute joy to hunt over. In all we harvested 187 geese in 6 hunts during the nuisance goose season.
Here is Friday's final early goose season hunt...
Here was the moment of the morning, I dropped this goose and when it came down we could hear it smoke a decoy, well it must have hit beside it, bounced up and then come down and impaled itself on the stake, if you look close you can see the stake protruding through the tailfeathers!! The DSD was ok but it was a close call, PHEW!!! Whytey took a few close ups to remember the moment, LOL!!
Saturday saw Whytey and I hunting a small beaver pond in a flooded bush that had been watering a few ducks feeding in a nearby barley field. Action wasnt fast and furious but it was steady and definitely "in our faces". Most of our shooting was under 10 yards. We took down a limit of ducks and I was lucky enought to collect a black duck as well as an all white hybrid of some sort. That was a shocker when he appeared in the sky scooting across in front of me after we opened up on the three ducks that had come in. He was so close as he went by I couldnt believe I hit him and as you can see by his neck my pattern wasnt exactly opened up
. A flock of 4 Canadas happened by and some hard fast clucks pulled them into 5 yards range and we put down a pair. Saturdays opener was a great success by all measures.
Today found Chad, Paul, Whytey and Myself set up on a river bend mudbar after some honkers and ducks. Was a beautiful morning, we had to move as the birds wanted to be downriver further. We reset and within a few minutes had a couplke small flocks work us over and finish. One flock of 6, 4 remained behind then a flock of 5 all 5 went down. A single came in and stayed as well as 4 mallards that left 2 of their buddies behind. I opted out for today and left my gun at home and instead ran the camcorder and filmed a bit of cool footage. Ended the morning with 10 honkers and 2 mallards. Whytey heads home tomorrow for a few weeks rest before his October return. Has been 1 heck of a great week spent with my buddy and his dog!!
