Early morning coyote

Got to the farm just before daybreak. Stopped in to talk to the farmer for about 20 minutes or so then headed out. Setup a little after legal light and started calling right away. A strong North West wind was making me rethink my decision about getting out. Cold is okay but cold and a strong wind is not so good for me or for calling.

The plan was to sit here and call for about an hour hoping to catch a coyote coming across this field from the north before heading into the swamp/marsh south of me for the day but it turned out to be the opposite.

As the caller is screaming out dying rabbit sounds for 15 minutes or so, Once again the thought of going home creeps in as the wind is cutting into my face pretty good but as luck would have it, I look over my shoulder and see 3 coyotes about 300 yds out just looking in the direction of the caller and decoy.... One almost right away decides it's not for him and tucks back into the bush. The other two are just kind of not sure what to do so I decided to change up sounds in hopes of getting them committed but still nothing... As they look like they are about to leave I decide to play that wonderful pup distress sound and here they come...

One was definitely bigger and darker then the other. As they started coming in I was going to take the bigger darker one in the back but as it neared, I noticed looking through the scope that he had a rat tail. (Sure sign of mange) so quickly turned to the lead coyote and wolfed her to stop about 70yds out.....I took the shot and she dropped, tried to get on the other one as it was running away but missed the shot.... Looking back, maybe I should have shot the bigger one to stop the spread of the mange.... Oh well, maybe next time out. :)

Nice hunt and great pics. I always like to see the details of your hunts to help me on my setups. You sure make fast work of getting them skinned out! Congrats on sticking it out and having a great hunt!

Thanks for posting and sharing your details. I really like reading your hunting reports.

A question for you (or others). You say "As the caller is screaming out dying rabbit sounds for 15 minutes or so..." I have never called in a coyote but I've tried. Based on friends and YouTube I generally call (electric) for 1-2 min, then be quiet for 28 min, then call for 1-2 min, then quiet for 28 min (i.e. call every 30 min, but only call for a couple of minutes). I understand what works for one person may not work for other people, but in general, should I be calling for 15 min straight then being quiet for ?15 min? or what ratio of calling/quiet should I be considering.

I would like at least to see coyotes, let alone have a shot at one. In SSW Ontario if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Your coyotes seem to be consistently darker than ours. Interesting but not good on the fur market.

Normally I turn on my caller and leave it playing all the time but on a really low volume, just loud enough that I can hear it.... But I do scream out with my hand calls for about 30-40 seconds at a time, waiting a minute or two between screaming out again..... the idea is if a coyote hears my hand calls screaming out, it comes out of the bush to investigates, sees my decoy, hears that non-threating soft rabbit dying sound and comes right on in...
But today with the strong winds, I didn't even bother with my hand calls.... I went straight to ecaller and blasted it as loud as it would go and did not let up until I seen the coyotes... I figured with todays wind the sound would have a hard time travelling in the Northern direction I was expecting the coyotes to come from... turns out the coyotes came from where I wasn't expecting them to be (south of me) but that just worked in my favour :)

I always look forward to fratri's posts , especially with pictures and pointy arrows and wind directions ;)
How long does it take you to skin them out like that?
Rob

I am getting better/faster but still from start to finish........I plan for 30 minutes or so.....
