I just bought an early production winchester 1894...serial #296###. It has a half octagon ,half round barrel and has a nickel plated receiver and barrel.I read online that winchester produced 117 nickel plated 1894's before the serial # 350000?? Is this true, and could this be rare find...also can anyone help me with some more info on this rifle...or direct me to where I can find some info? Worth in good condition?
Thanks.

Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody Wyoming, are the folks to talk to about whether the serial number records contain any corroborating evidence that this plating is original, or was added after the fact.
Also know as "Get a factory letter". Rare, valuable, or worthless and common. Find out. Nobody will part with a bunch of money for a rifle that you cannot prove came from the factory that way.

Cheers

Yes, if true, they are not common. Up to the point where there are no more available records for the 1894 (serials 353,999), there are 117 documented as nickle plated within that serial range. Unfortunately, that is as high as the records go. Don't know how many were produced after that point, but given 353,999 is pretty early in the 1894 production line, there would certainly be more. That said, yours is within the letterable range, and you can find out the info from Cody.
Anyway, you should post some pics, that may tell the story.
Cheers,
Matt
