hey guys

getting ready to bow hunt next week anyone have any tips or tricks to bag a big buck in the early season?

Calling-Bleats, snorts, grunts, fawn distress????
Sent's-dominant buck, estrus, attractants???
Time's?
Moon phase?

Big bucks can be very elusive in the early season. You may have to go way back in the bush or look for quiet isolated pockets in farm country. If they haven't been disturbed by other hunters or harvesting activities they may be relatively calm and easy to pattern.

I've shot my biggest two bucks in the early season and both were found bedded down in a dry march bottom in the middle of wide open ag country.

The majority of the work for hunting in the early season should be done in August and Sept trying to find the animals. BTW good luck and have a great season.

P.S if you like road hunting you may see deer but your odds on a big boy are pretty low. Once the rut starts you might just luck out and find one in the open too love struck to care. As for the thingamajigs and dodads they may or may not be effective. Mostly hype. Being in the right area and knowing the terrain combined with good hunting technique will win out over the toys every time.

Location Location Location O yea and a little patience and some LUCK:):):)
Happy Hunting
Pete.....

Most of the "gimiks" lure in more hunters than actual game

Those 2 quotes say it all. Those gadgets are invented by someone with a marketing degree. I see it all the time on the TV shows...the hunters start rattling, a deer walks in (paying no attention to them what-so-ever) and they say they attracted it. You can have a truckload of this crap, but if you aren't where the deer are...you're not going to see anything. :)

We all know most of the junk on the shelves is just that "junk"....

I know there are a place and time for sents and calls and in the early season there does not seem to be anything to raise the odds.

Later in the season during the rut I have been able to grunt and rattle a buck with in range of my shotgun but again these things dont seem to work in early October.

I have the location I have doe's and fawns coming every morning and evening and a few small bucks that have made a great pattern but the 2 big bucks I have been catching on my trail cam's dont seem to be following any pattern. I have not been able to nail down where they are coming and going like with the smaller bucks and doe's.

I do not know a ton about moon phase effects on deer yet but could it be possible the big bucks are living by the moon phase?

I think the best way to hunt early big bucks is just outside their bedding areas when they r coming and going from feeding areas. I've tried the grunts and other calls and didn't have much luck with. Good luck with the hunting!!!

I can barely sleep at night waiting for wednesday to come........saw big buck in early august on the property I hunt. Hopefully he's still around, tommorow I will be practicing w/ the xbow just to be sure. Good luck fellas....post your pics.

At this time of year, a mature buck will have a reasonable pattern. He will visit all the same places in his area. He likely has a favorite place to water or two. He'll have feeding areas he'll go to when the weather is rainy, when it's hot, when it's cool, or when he wants to get away from it all. You need to find this all out with some very diligent scouting, or you can rely on dumb luck like the rest of the population. I'm running on dumb luck this year due to high fuel prices, and little time. Good luck, and stay still.
