Earnest Hemmingway's Westley Richards .577 nitro express

more a shotgun than the tommy one.

He did use a shotgun. He was pretty severely mentally ill at that point, having been deteriorating for some time.

I'm reading The Green Hills again, it's a lot more profound at some points than I'd realised from my earlier readings.

Easy now as I’m part of the remains of that generation and yes times are hard on our old ways of morality and decency. His writings are always great to revisit and reread. Loved his way of doing things been fishing off Cuba to a bull fight in Mexico before they stopped them and a couple safaris to Africa. Did my stint in Alaska as well as outfitting in NW Ontario. Wish more young guys could have enjoyed that life. Have more guns than anyone should have and wonder where they will go when I’m gone. The misses wants them thinned as best I can but it’s nice to know that 3-5 elephant guns are ready if needed.

Still the Old Man and the Sea wins for me.

Good deal of indication Hemingway suffered from CTE, and as happens with that it snowballed later in life in particular. We guided some ex-SEALs this year and one showed us his brain scans, CTE damage from explosion related concussions. They even suspect heavy weapons fire (as the shooter) has a cumulative toll now, from blast too not only recoil. I know after twenty rounds of .505 Gibbs I felt something was off, and the sensation of having one’s bell rung by a punch and that’s nothing for volume compared to the real deal. Hemingway exacerbated his ambulance driver days damage with boxing and other brain damaging behaviour.

That’s all still out there and some of us still chase it, the drive to go after it is what’s fading.
