Get your self a cow call. the bugles are good for locating bulls but to get in close the a cow call seems to work best. and you have to move to the bulls. the bigones usually have cows already and aren't looking to fight, but if an eager cow starts coming towards them well you get the idea. It also helps explain the noise you are making in the bush as your moving along, But watch out for the cows they will start toward you as well when you get close. I'm no expert (ex-is a has been and a spert-is a drip under pressure) but I carry one bugle E.L.K. power bugle and 3 cow calls a carltons and a big bull sleeze cow mouth calls and a primos hoochie mama. good luck and find out what works best for your self, remember these are fairly smart wild critters and what works on one bull may not work on another or the sameone twice for that matter.blindside said:
x2 on the cow call; learn to blow it in 20 minutes, very effective. I've called in a bull with 15 cows, a few solo bulls, and a bunch of cows, one of which came in to about 3 feet behind me. She was so quiet I didn't know she was there till I heard her breathing - scared the hell out of me. If you want to learn to bugle, that's a good locator - but I think a cow in heat is tough to beat for bringing them in. I use a primos.
All of the primos bugles are quite easy to use. I have their pack bugle, and I carry a mouth reed, as well as a hoochi mama. I know a guy that just uses a mouth reed and carrys a tube for bugling. He does quite well with it, but I can't seem to get the reed to make the proper sounds. 
Power bugle is easiest and has really good sound I think. If you can master a mouth reed it is really versatile and nothing comes close.. does everything from calf, cow, small bull, herd bull and a host of other combinations. It really is the best call..if you can master it. I wouldn't waste my money on a hoochie mama.. they are prone to failure and really poorly built in my opinion. I know of 5 failures last year at the most critical times. Nothing as frustrating as a half arsed bleat/squeak from a call to cause a bull to bust outta the country just when you thought you had em. Once they fail you have to return them in original packaging, How many read the fine print?

The problem with reed calls, internal or external, is users blow from the mouth which is wet air instead of from deeper down which is dryer. Wet air causes the reed to fail and or sound "bubbly. Practice huffing from deeper in the chest like you are blowing up a balloon...you will notice a big difference.

I have whistled in alot of elk and you just would be amazed at how well this combo works...they are both very easy to use and sound phenominal...just my 2 bits
The Hoochis work very well,provided ya don't play and piss around with them for hours on end...I've had the same one for 4 years,never a failure or anything

The only time I've tried to 'call' an elk was when I drove up to the house in the Kootenays and there on the lawn (the same lawn where I shot a nice 4X4 mule buck) was a 5X5 bull (not legal) and 4 cows.
I got outta the truck and laid one on with the bugle.
The elk all looked at me like I had 3 heads and sauntered off into the woods...
I instantly had an image of myself walking into some small African villiage and screaming gibberish at the locals in a loud voice... shoulda practiced a little more I guess!
