I have to replace the stock butt plate on my Remington 1100 after cutting it down to better fit. I need it shortened by 7/8-1 inch, what is the best route to go about replacing it's butt plate after shortening the stock? Would a butt plate or pad off a 20 gauge fit it? What other options are out there?

You're almost certainly going to need a grind to fit recoil pad, the odds of an off the shelf pad fitting is very small. I like the Pachmayr Old English Decellerator pads as they absorb recoil well, grind easily and look nice. If you don't know how to grind a pad look at youtube as I'm sure there will be numerous videos on this or you can get a gunsmith to do this for $50 or so.
