I understand that the East Germans made AKs and that on reunification they sold them all in bulk to the Finns.

Didn't they make AK74s too?
Whatever happened to the 74s?

The DDR AKs I remember seeing had knobby black plastic furniture. Memory fades where it was, but likely in Kuwait City after the Iraqis were chased out in 1991.

I have two of them. Side folding stocks with plastic grips and for ends
The ak47's came from the middle east

Some made it into the U.S. as parts kits, however they are uncommon.

Only a few of the non Soviet Warsaw Pact countries had even begun to switch over to 5.45 by the time the Cold War ended.

My understanding is they scrapped or sold off most of them.
However they did keep a fair percentage for war storage, but that was in the late 90s. I havent heard anything about their status since.
The (west) Germans were shocked to find that the 545 ammo for the ak74s they inherited failed Euro standards of environmental toxicity.

This is the first Ive heard of them selling their AKs to Finland. I was under the impression that the policy of post unification Germany was to either retain or destroy their Warsaw Pact arsenal. Hence why DDR ammo and parts kits were always considered to be rare and desirable among collectors down south.

They kept their brand new MiG29s for quite a while to use for force on force war games etc until the budget got slashed and they ended up giving them to Poland
