hello, there is another thread going about an east german refurbed K98. this got me wondering, how many east german rifles are there?

mosin nagant (marked with 1, 2, or 3 in a triangle IIRC)
G43
K98 tgf marked (new czech manufacture)
K98 refurbed as in that other thread.
SKS (karbiner S)
AK type
SSG 82 5.45x39
Parabellum (yes i know, this isn't a rifle)

which are NVA and which are VoPo? my uncle was in the NVA in the early '70's and said they had AK types. and some of the K98 are marked with the VoPo sunburst.

and where are the SKS's????

Russian Capture

Hello,

To most collectors, most of these weapons will fall under the catch phrase of Russian Capture. As you have pointed out, there is a difference. I have a G43 that has both VoPo and the russian capture X on it. The weapons could be interchangable since the east germans were a puppet government. There was nothing stopping the Russians from telling the germans to send a batch of K98s or something to the NVA.

As well there are RC p38's and I have seen an RC Browning 1922.

by NVA i was refering to the Nationalen Volksarmee der DDR.

VoPo is Volkspolitzei. The VoPo often had older WW2 refurbed stuff, while the NVA had the more front-line weaponry. Since most NVA stuff is prohib in Canada, most of the post-war refurb material we see here is ex-VoPo, though in practival terms, I doubt anyone here could tell the difference between a P38 issued to the NVA vs. one issued to the VoPo. I know I couldn't! For some reason most/all post-war refurbs have been labelled "VoPo", probably for convenience sake.

I have a soft spot for East german stuff. Here is an older pic of my East German contract Czech TGF 1950 and a mid war BNZ East German rework.

CAN AM;

Strange that you mention left over German gear going to Croatia....

During the war and after we were mandated to do a lot of cleaning up we seldom saw the mentioned weapons....

We did see a lot of HK gear which was captured by the Serbs, plenty of it....All modern kit.

The majority of their small arms were what they kept when they seperated from Belgrade, AK, RPK, Yugo 49, Yugo 56, Mauser rifles (M24, M48, M98) Nagant rifles, even some of our stuff that they captured.

I spoke to several Croats who indicated that the DDR stocks of Karabiner-S, AK, etc. were transferred to Croatia to potentially be used in the war, as well as HK G3's. By the absence of these on the market I have to assume they were never issued.

Well in all my times there we saw very little of the old stuff, mostly new....

A lot of HK kit, most only dropped once, we purchased thousands of captured and field pick up HK small arms.... We purchased evrything from 9mm handguns, 9mm SMGs, 7.62 nato rifles, 5.56 rifles, LMGs all HK never east German.
Does not mean it was not there but my past experience says they would have offered it for sale if it were there, they sold off everything before the UN, Nato and EU set up the "new rules" for all of the new countries....
Regards
John

You would likely know better than I, John. You've been camped out over there for a while. Just when I hear things from two seperate sources I tend to put some weight to those rumors.

Cheers,

Chris
