These seem to be pretty rare in general, but has anyone ever come across one in Canada? For the most part I’m relatively young/new to collecting but I don’t think I’ve seen these at all. Are they just unicorns or is there some obscure politics behind their scarcity?

I’ve seen every make of SKS in Canada, even North Korean.. but never an East German.

I’d love an East German SKS in the collection. Most were destroyed after the fall of the wall.

I’m sure there are some in Africa somewhere being ill treated…

*sigh* reminds me of the pictures of the Sturmgewehr's in Syria

I don't think there is a lot of real information on them. I'm no expert but the photos online look like they were being used by Police rather than Military.

First place I would look for them would be Cuba.

I knew a collector in Saskatchewan in the early 90s. He had an East German Karabiner. It was well made and nicely finished. He showed it to an East German refugee, someone who'd gone over the Wall, and it was giving an old man back a favourite girlfriend. The veteran then repeated all the names of the parts, and the operating characteristics in German. No idea what happened to that gun.

Then there's Albanian.

I know a few Albanians. They figure most of the stockpile is in attics and underneath floorboards. Beautiful country, that history has taught the locals to be wary of everyone, especially their own government.
