Those stocks look great, I especially like the Ruger clone !!!! NOOB question, what kind of mags are on those SKS's and how did you convert them to accept them ? I've been wanting to get a SKS rifle for a while and something like what you have there looks ideal !!!

they are tapco duckbill mags, can be bought most places ..about $34 bucks. You do have to take out the original steel box magazine. You must also remove some of the wood on both sides of the magwell so the tapco will slide in.

Easter egg coloring?! That second one looks awesome (the others are great, but that second one....) Tell me more, i think I might have to try this. I already use tru oil on most stocks.....

First you must strip the stock. use paint stripper or sanding with 180 paper or both. Finish it off with 400 paper. next pre set OVEN to 500. Put stock in till its to hot to hold. Do NOT shut oven door !! "use oven mits" Watch all the oil come out !! Rub it off with a cloth rag. keep doing this till the oil stops coming out. 4 or 5 times. If you don't get the oil out , you will get a rough look in the clear.
I was told Not to use OIL based stain for this kind of work. I was also told that WATER base stain looks the best under clear because it doesn't hide the wood grain. he told me food coloring works great as well. Simply add drops of Color into the water till you get the desired look on the stock you want.."more drops of color,..= deeper color on stock. let dry over night. Put layer of TRU oil on....2 hours later repeat. Let sit over night. Apply 2 more coats the next day..Let sit. Put 1 coat true oil on let dry for a day. Use WET sand paper 1000 grit and sand stock. the next day add 2 coats true oil. next day 2 more coats. Sand with 1000 wet paper. Finaly put a very light coat of true oil on. The last day , take automotive rubbing compound and a buffer to the stock. 2 times or as needed till you get a mirror finish. then I use car polish to it and polish it with a flannel sheet. It isn't much work..buts its very time consuming and you cant rush it. Well...right or wrong,..there it is, the magic formula. If I follow it, the stock looks great every time. Ive learned you cant cut corners with this.

Those look awesome! I have to try this, I want to stain the stock on my daughter's Cooey pink. Once you have colour/water mixed to where you want it, do you then just brush or wipe it on?

I use a 1inch white bristle brush from Rona. Its very soft. You don't want a coarse brush leaving Streaks.

Well, I finally got to finish my daughter's Cooey with pink food coloring. It turned out awesome, and she's a pretty happy girl! Thanks for the great idea!

wait so your telling me that you just add food coloring to water, then coat with tru oil?

or is it food coloring into a water based commercial wood stainer?

will this work on laminate?
Sand stock...put on easter egg coloring or food coloring..add 10 coats true oil with sanding inbetween.

Wish I had seen this sooner, oil stain on Russian Birch doesn't penetrate very well. Working on a Tula TOZ 8M for a friend. Stayed away from water based because I didn't want to raise the grain. Putting on multiple layers of my own red dyed oil poly. taking forever to build colour, but should be nice when done.
What you've done looks great, I'll use your technique next time.
