Eastern Cougars Declared Extinct—But That Might Not be Bad

That sounds like the stance that the Saskatchewan government took for years, despite numerous sighting and the odd one getting shot.

Now we have a trapping season for them.

After a buddies horse showed up in the yard years back with claw marks across it's rump, after being down at the creek, cougar talk led to information that there were something like a dozen pairs released not so far away as part of some covert reintroduction program.
We never did get official confirmation but more than one local source seemed to know about it.

That story is persistent and seems to come up in the south too. They are really hating on the cats there.

Good on you, that kitty needed a hug!! ;)

There's always been a small population in NE Sask. The pictured cat was caught east of carrot river in a wolfmaster. I think Wade had to give his cat up but as dogleg said we can keep them now if a licenced trapper. Know a few guys with trail cam pics. My dad and brother have both seen one (50 years apart). I was guiding a colorado resident for whitetail in the pasquia hills and had a cougar track on our snowmoble trail. He didn't see the big deal.
