Hi all,

I will soon be in a bit of a predicament and I am looking for some advice. I have been hunting moose for years with my trusty BLR 308 :D , that is not the problem. My predicament is that members of my family keep wanting to come hunting, my wife just started last year and my nephew will be 14 soon and wants to get his license. My brother has indicated a desire to come with his son as well.

The problem is that I am the only gun collector in the family (my nephew has good potential though, he loves hunting) but I am running out of rifles to lend so we can all go out at the same time. I just bought my wife a cheap 308 military conversion rifle which is good as a starter but I will likely upgrade it to a better one if she sticks with it for a few years. I have a feeling that once my nephew starts coming with us that I will lose the use of my BLR for a few years  , you just can’t beat the 308 for a new hunter, in my opinion.

Now to my question, I was looking at the SIR flyer last night and saw the Mossberg 100 and Stevens rifles both listed around $300. Has anyone got any experience with these guns? I have had the chance to check over a Remington 710 which is probably one of the ugliest guns around but the price is right. I have not tried Savage yet but I believe they sell a $450 version with a detachable clip which I like. I like the Stevens just because it is real cheap and I can get it in 7mm but 30-06 would be good as well. Chances are I will be the one using this gun so Scope only is good enough, although I do wish they came with iron sights, I really like my BLR set up, scope, iron sights and see thru rings.

I don’t want to break the bank account on a gun I will use for only a few years and only a few days a year. I am always looking for cheap used ones and so are my buddies but a NEW CHEAP$$$ (not cheap quality) gun looks like it might be in the cards.

Any opinions? Anyone in your hunt camps have one of these “econo” guns?

Thanks

Well, im sure you know what the CGNers think of the Model 710. It ain't pretty. If not, do a search for "Remington 710" and you will have hours of entertaining reading.

But, one of the guys I hunt with has two of them... one in .30-06 and one in 7mm. Personal opinions aside, they have worked flawlessly. His daughter used one to take a nice doe on Sunday evening. He has shot them quite a bit in the past few months and has not had any problems, and they are both sub MOA guns with handloads.

I took a good look at one of them last weekend, and yes, there is alot of plastic on them, the scope is cheap, and well... it's a cheap gun made to be as inexpensive as possible. It is what it is, and if thats what you need, I say go for it.

I think that as a loaner gun, you want something cheap that you wont have to worry about, the 710 or the Stevens option would do nicely.

Whay would anyone get a 710 when they can be into a Savage 110 variant for the same money!?! I just don;t get it!?! The 710 is suitable only as a boat anchor or a prop in a forearms safety training course accompanied with the commensurate warning from the instructor to not actually buy one. :!:

From all reports, the Stevens 200 & Savage package rifles are the way to go

myself if I was in your shoes I'd buy a Stevens 200 and mount a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope on it or a fixed power Weaver.

If you want to get a quality firearm without breaking the bank, then spend a little time going through the EE Forum and you're sure to find something you like at a price you can afford .Plus I bet the cgn sellers will make better deals than the local B&M will .

Kenny I have a Savage/Stevens in 25-06 and I have put 35 rounds thur it so far and with the addition of a limb saver de-resonator on the end of the barrel, some of my more exp. rifle shooting friends can make that gun drive tacks so to speak. I have a 3200 on top and even shaky old me can put 5 into a 4 inch row. I also put a limb saver pad on the butt. Rifles used to intimidate me some what, but I find this gun fun to shoot

Do not buy a Remington 710... cursy cursy blackies eyeball...
The savage is good value... Mossberg is sketchy... or check out the exchange forum... lots of deals there :?

The .308 is a good caliber for a seasoneed hunter as well!
It's just a boring cartridge is all( TOO accurate, TOO available, everybody has one!)
You won't go wrong with a savage....

A couple of my friend have purchased the Sav 111 Package deals , one in a 300 Win and one in a 7mm Rem. I have shot both guns and the 300 shot a 5/8 group and the 7mm Rem did an inch at 100 yds. Both rifles were around $500.00 ,boughtin different places. Two other guys also purchased the same guns but I have not talked to them on how they perform ,but bein a Sav they will be good also .

My vote is a savage package. If you're partial to new (I'd go to the exchange forum) for $500 (all set) they're a good value, I think (but I don't own one). The people I know who own one are very pleased.

I just ordered my second Savage Stevens 200 from SIR. The first was a 300 win Mag and is very accurate as posted in another thread here.

That convinced me to order another one, this time in 223 rem.

They are on sale right now for $299.99 in 270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag.

Don't know how you can do much better than that for brand new.
