I'd like to get everyones thoughts on this:

I was swapping an enlarged trigger guard into a Colt Canada MRR. The lower was secured on a Bev block in a vice while I was knocking the pin out with a punch and small hammer. I was using a number of small taps to remove the pin instead of larger heavy strikes when this occurred.

Suffice it to say, I'm VERY surprised, as I've replaced trigger guards in a number of AR lowers before.

What are your thoughts? I have a hard time believing it was too much pressure. Is this something that Colt Canada would conceivably warranty?

Ouch! You could try JB Weld for a quick fix.

Fixable if you have access to a machine shop. I doubt CC will warranty but doesn't hurt to try.

Answer: Colt does not offer an express warranty, but acknowledges implied Magnuson-Moss Act obligations. Colt products will be serviced for defects in original factory materials or workmanship to the original purchaser at no charge for one year from the date of retail purchase. Cosmetic blemishes and damage from normal wear and tear, abuse, neglect, improper ammunition, or to finishes/coatings are excluded. Be sure to retain your sales slip as proof of original purchaser and purchase date when making a claim.

Common user error when the lower frame isn't properly supported, you can JB welded but it will not last and it will stand out like a sore thumb or you break off the tab on the other side smooth out the edges, then colour the raw aluminium with some Birchwood Casey Super Black and install a DD pistol grip with the build-in trigger guard.

If I end up replacing the lower receiver, would the original lower with the broken tab be worth anything on the EE?
 
A valuable lesson learned in "always support your work properly". Sh!tty buzz it had to happen on a lower like that.

I've seen one or two over the years, although they were only worth around 50-80 bucks if I recall correctly.

I was able to drift a pin back in without JB weld. Supported off the trigger guard and the other "ear", it's actually reasonably solid.

I'm actually even surprised that it is the first one you broke : military maintenance manuals are very clear on the need to support the "wing" before driving a pin in or out, considering that these roll pins are quite large.

I recommend reading this : https://www.coltcanada.com/assets/10044s-2005-09-20.pdf, page 3-2-32 :
"Extreme care must be taken to properly support the lower receiver in the area around the trigger guard pivot pin hole when driving out the trigger guard pivot pin. Failure to do so may result in a broken or cracked lower receiver."
 
The other guards I've worked with had drift pins that could pushed out with considerably less effort. The pin on this one was much tighter, so more of the energy was likely transferring into the ear.

Expensive lesson learned.

It's too late now but this would be a good investment ( Little Crow Gunworks AR-15 Trigger Guard Roll Pin Pusher )
