Hi Guys,

Here another mystery for me. It is engraved Danzig 1837. Very few information available about it. I wonder if it's original or has been modified. Those I can see from Internet are full stock. Not this one obviously.

What do you think? Was it exported for the Civil War. There is a lot of information on the buttplate tang. Any suggestion?

28 on buttplate tang and 28 on the ramrod.

Thanks.

Martin

After carefully looking at the wood, it is a modification from the full stocked version.

Any idea about the possible unit?

Cut-down military Postdam musket made into a hunting gun, work of a 19th Century Bubba !

Agree with Potsdam musket ident. Most of 50,000 or so were converted Model 1809 flinters sold to both sides in the civil war ramp-up. The North bought most just to keep them out of the hands of the South. Later issues were converted 1833 model and I believe some of these were even rifled. They were poorly respected because of the reported variation of bore size and therefore inaccuracy in use. This piece looks to be later modified possibly at Bannermans in the late 1870's or so.

Front sight is part of the sporting job.
Is it in the museum because it is an old gun, or does it have a particular provenance?
