Hi Guys,

Don't know if I'm at the right place to post this and ask questions about it but I will try. I am more active on the Milsurp and Blackpowder forums.

Here is a rifle that I'm unsure about its designation. It is said, FNC Exp (FAL) CDN. So, what I understand, it was an experimental rifle for the Canadian Forces now a Museum artifact. If any of you have some more details/info about it, please, feel free to comment.

Thanks.

Martin

Canada trialed the FNC, Galil, m16 and a number of other rifles before adopting the M16 modified into what is now the C7

This.

the weapon school in borden in the 90's had over a dozen of these rifles for trials. I believe that is where yours came from??

I know for sure that there's one left (this is the only place where I got to handle an FNC) but I guess they donated the others to museums? They aren't here anymore.

When the trials were conducted in Valcartier circa 1980, a friend of mine was tasked to the project as a summer callout reservist. As I recall, the rifles included the M16A1, FNC, Galil, FAMAS and something else that was contemporary like the Steyr AUG. I don't think the British SA80 was ready yet (if it ever was). The usual politcal and image objections were raised for the Galil and FAMAS, so it was a horse race between the M16A1 and the FNC. My friend then said the differences became clearer. The FNC started to break some critical pin in the bolts. His job included running the busted pieces from Valcartier to then-Hull to the Quality Engineering Test Establishment (QETE) labs for metalurgical assessment. Yes, the FNC has similar ergonomics to the old FN C1, but it was not comparible to the M16 in many other respects. IMHO, the right firearm was chosen.

During the trials, they found the FNC did not perform as well in cold weather as the AR15. The FNC did place 2nd in the end.

I almost bought a semi auto version about 20+ years ago at Hanna gun show, it had a FNC1 flash suppressor on it. Kinda sorry later i never bought it.
