Dremel and all your little bits would be very useful. Bring them along. Yes you can (people will flame me) and I have had this done so many times. If they are a super good welder and the barreled receiver is clamped well in a vise, then the unit is properly aligned for the unitizing job. Remember that we are not touching the welding rod on the barrel (will certainly affect the heat treating), but on the gas cylinder rear band where it meets the front band.

Hope this helps.

Barney

YES, bring the Garand if you can... it's all good!! I got all kinds of shzt to show you also with the M1Garand that applies to the M14 Family.

The Calgary CGNutters got their 10 Nov 2007 Clinic last year. So I gotta deliver on an Edmonchuk M14 clinic like I promised. Here goes.... :dancingbanana:

* Date: Sat 08 Nov 2008
* Location: Spruce Grove Gun Club (SGGC)
* Cost: $ 45 (SGGC wants $ 10 per head for non-members shooting)
* Timings: 0900 start - Likely finish up around 1600 hrs

Material Covered:

- Tools for tweaking, tools to avoid, tools that are nice to have but expensive, tools that are overrated and too expensive
- Gadgets that are nice to have, need to have, and useless to have (but I had to buy it to show you)
- Tools that you can make yourself instead of buying, tools that you can have buddies (owe you favors) make up for you
- Stripping the boomstick (you will be surprised at what I can show you)
- Assembling the boomstick, and what to look for so that worthwhile tweaks can be or should be made
- Tweaks that work, tweaks that don't work, expensive tweaks so yer #### does not fall off
- Useless tweaks unless you have more money that shooting ability (many stories to follow at the clinic)
- Common pitfalls, expensive tweaks that work, more ways to ensure that yer #### don't fall off
- Lunch and then tweaking in the afternoon, shimming, pounding out more shims (all hands on activities)
- Lots of networking and socializing all the time. This is priceless (even if the $ 45 only covers my costs).

* Things to bring: your M14, some basic tools, notebook, pens, digital camera, rags, ball peen hammer, punches, screwdrivers, more punches, TIG Welder, Service Truck (vise for rebarreling), fired brass for us to measure, plastic or rubber mallet, wood block or 2, Black and Decker Workmate (clamping ability for your barreled action or stock), masking tape, duct tape, Loctite (blue and red stuff), more to follow as I remember or remind myself.

* Registration: Email me at hungry556@rogers.com to obtain a .doc (Word) registration form, you can fill it out electronically and email it back to me. EMT'ed $ 35 or $ 45 for non-members shooting, is great, but mailed cheques have worked in the past. When you fill out the form and email it back to me, print a copy for your own reminder, I have listed a potential packing list for you.

Okay, in the interest of QC and more attention I can pay towards each of you, I gotta consider capping the attendance. I know it's a PITA, for those of you who could not register, but I gotta be fair and deliver a great clinic to the early birds.... :(

I will coordinate all attendees and correspondence on this thread. Regular updates to follow once I can firm up the facilities at the Spruce Grove GC. Keep checking this list to ensure that I got your form and yer $ amount correctly.

Do they ever have one of these on the Toronto area?

Are spots numbered 32 through 35 still open?? I was away on vacation and missed this thread.
GAWD!!! I want in so bad I can taste the gun powder.
I just want to get the barrel indexing done and how to properly lube the neccessary parts.

Rick65cat.... Got you on the waiting list. Keep monitoring things until we get closer, things might change. One never knows.

cbabes: Yeah, we just did a Barrie Clinic in Jan 2008 this winter. Stay in touch. I'm in Collingwood, north of you , right in ski country so M14 Clinics are easy to do. I'm in Sudbury for the 20th of Sep, you can come up there, it's certainly a nice drive from Moronto.

Keeping an eye on it, but wondering if theres anyone thats signed up but has already attended once that would be willing to let in an Edmonton local in on his/her place?

Hey there all, I was just going over the thread here and just realised that I might be out of my league here. I am just starting out in this and would like to learn more. So as a beginner with just the rifle, what are some basic things should I bring with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!

Hey Hungry.....would you or any of the others here be able to teach how to do a barrel chop and threading. I've got a couple I'd like to cut down in length and would rather not have to send them away if I can learn it at the clinic. :)

Use the list in the first post as a guide for things to bring. The clinic will span the

"WOW this thing comes apart",

to as complicated as we have time for hopefully.

As for chopping and threading barrels I'm bringing a chop saw, but there won't be a lathe at the clinic. I going to try and find someone around town who will be able to crown barrels etc.

The gunsmith at Lock N' Load does it & I know 2 more profesional folks who can do it also.

gadgets640: Don't you worry about being a raw newbie. Trust me, you will still come out of here with your head spinning from the knowledge I will toss at you and compounded with more experiences shared from the other M14 addicts. That's the 'magic' I have discovered over the years of doing these clinics.

Chopping ? Let's see what kind of equipment turns up at the clinic, but for the record, the chopping and crowning , then threading is best done in a gunsmith's shop. I'm focusing on the simplest tweaks that one can do to tighten your groups up without spending a pile of after tax dollars. :D

Cheers,
Barney

Can an updated list be posted please?
I am still hoping to get in on this clinic and since its local it would be perfect for me.

The list on the first page of this thread is updated daily. And right now, that's where things sit. One kind CGNutter gave up his seat since he figured that a newbie M14 lover would better benefit. What class!! All kinds of things keep coming up before the 8th of Nov. One never knows what can happen before then.

In the meantime, I better book my flight....

M305 Barrel set screw

In prep for the Nov SG clinic, I removed the barrel set screw on my M305. The head of the set screw was damaged in the process. Can I fire the rifle without the set screw installed or do I need to install a replacement?
