Edmonton area cut and rethread barrel

I got a Rainer arms 18in SPR barrel for next to nothing…… but theres a catch the first 1/2in of threads on the muzzle are completely shot previous owner screwed up installing a muzzle brake is there some one in the edmonton area that could fix this up for me.
 
Run the appropriate die over the monkied up threads for a starter, see if this works. Then take it to the next level.

You can't cut the barrel shorter, it'll be prohibited. Can you post a pic of the threads? Your best hope is to chase the threads with a die or have the threads cut by a machinist/gunsmith on a lathe. You might be able to recut some 1/2-28 threads but they probably won't be that deep.
 
Go to Tier One Armoury. They have a retired weapons tech with 22 years of experience. They have a lot of tools, plus they have access to machining equipment.
 
Might be necessary to install a sleeve, then thread the sleeve to 1/2-28.
Or, cut the threads further onto the barrel, and alter the muzzle unit so that the barrel extends further into it.

What am I missing how would having the barrel shortened by an inch or so make it prohib?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Canadian Firearm laws. Go figure, the barrels can leave the factory at shorter lengths but you can't cut it down shorter than 457mm or it becomes prohibited.

Now you understand why you got that barrel for a song? Bummer.

Yeah, I'd machine up an interference fit sleeve after I turned off the damaged threads and start fresh. Depending on the guns use I'd TIG weld (tack really) the sleeve in two small spots no filler rod.

Trinimon nailed it.

I had a 308 that was threaded for 5/8-24 and the threads piled up. I was lucky, I was able to have it turned down and recut to 1/2-28. I used a 5.56 flash hider and bored it out a bit to work with 308.

In your case you could have it machined to a smaller OD and threaded and then have an adapter made that has 1/2-28 threads on the OD and smaller threads on the ID. It might be a no go though if the wall thickness on your barrel gets too thin. I'm assuming it's a 5.56 gun? Barrel is around 0.5" where the threads were and the bore is 0.224". That gives you around 0.276" of material or around 0.138" per side which is fine, but if you have the barrel turned down another 50-80 though and thread it to accept an adapter there won't be much meat left. You'll want to remove as little as possible from the barrel but still remove enough to machine an adapter that will have OD and ID threads.

If it were me I would recut the original 1/2-28 threads, pick a muzzle device you're happy with and thread it on, index it correctly and tack it on. It'll be permanent. Maybe go to tier one armoury and have them do it on a lathe. If you have to cut new threads and you use a die it is very easy to bugger that up and end up with your threads not being concentric to the centreline of the bore. Still might not work as the threads will be so shallow that the muzzle device will have a ton of play while you try to thread it on.

I feel your pain on this one OP. Definitely visit tier 1 and see what they can do for you.
