Looking for a good handgun coach in Edmonton for private instruction at SGGC. Fundamentals first (to improve my technique/accuracy), then progressing to "defensive handgun" type instruction. No interest in IPSC/IDPA competition, but that wouldn't preclude a good coach from those worlds obviously. Just looking for someone to accelerate my learning more than my plinking is. ( grin).

Any suggestions?

Wow, I'd have thought there'd have been lots of suggestions. How about a reasonably good coach? :)

Your best bet would be to hang out at some non-franchise gun shops and ranges. Talk to people on both sides of the counter. The type of person that would give one-on-one coaching is not the same type of person that would advertise or even offer their services online. You're more likely to find someone experienced who'll trade ammo for a few short sessions than a "personal shooting coach." IMHO

Phoenix gun club or Milarm or P&D should be able to help. Talk to the R.S.O.s at West Edmonton Mall. Other than that there are instructional videos for sale on the net. Google away!

Yeah I'd agree with the previous statement that asking around would probably be your best bet, the best guys to learn from definitely wouldn't want to advertise on the web where every guy with a pistol will hound him for training. For some pointers you could download the MAGPUL series, not all of them are great but there is some good stuff in there. If you get super desperate though I would certainly be willing to pass along a few pointers for the tactical/defensive shooting I've learned during my few years in the military. But by no means am I an expert in the subject, I just have a base knowledge to work from. Hope you can find someone much more qualified in the field though, good luck.

Calgary has like 5 different companies that offer tactical firearms training. Why does Edmonton have zero?

I already know about Rising Sun (he is not operating at the present)

For several shooting disciplines, Calgary and region has many more choices over Edmonton. Wild West Guns is for tourists IMO, and Genesse is in temporary hiatus.

Which kind of sucks for us avid shooters north of Redmonton. :(

To keep busy we seek other venues.

rising sun martial arts / rising sun tactical offers training as well, mike mcguire is a great instructor. we had him come up locally 2 years ago and he did some great courses.

make sure to discuss with the instructor before hand what you want to improve, different instructors teach different things, a mindset or tactics instructor deal with deployment of the weapon rather then a accuracy/technique instructor who would teach you how to shoot better.

some things to think on.

You want to learn to shoot a handgun? From a "National level" instructor?

Take your .22rf pistol and 2 mags to the Phoenix on Monday nights @7pm and talk to the Bullseye crew. Specifically ask for Russ.

It'll cost you all of range fee's and probably coffee afterwards.

Do you happen to know his last name? Older skinny guy, beard? I know a Russ from Edmonton (does Swiss shoots at SGGC), if its the same guy I may have to hit him up...
