So the time has come where I think I need to add an AR to my collection. I've already got a CZ 858 and a Robinson Arms XCR so an AR seems the next logical step. Keep in mind I know lots about guns, but virtually nothing about AR's. Now my biggest issue is that funds are a little tight right now so really high end AR's are not an option for me. I've looked at a few, however anything reasonably priced seems to be in a longer barrel, or a Norinco. I'd like a 10.5" or 12.5" barrel, flat top upper, needs to be reliable, well built and capable of decent accuracy.... Is MOA too much to ask? I'd love to go piston driven, but it seems there aren't many affordable piston AR there.... So what do you guys recommend?

I started out with a Norinco 10.5. I have an NEA 10.5 on the way from The Shooting Edge.

I got the Norinco thinking it would be a problematic rifle. So I would learn how to make it run. About 7-800 rounds through it. Only failures I had were related to not seating the mag properly.

I thought the AR was a difficult platform. But so far for me who is new to it, not so far. There are You Tube videos on how to field strip them.

For the first? Nothin wrong with the norc im lovin mine for the price, its like the chick that isnt that great looking but allways puts out even when you call drunk as :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: at 3am

I generally live by the rule "Nothing Chinese unless it's in a schoolgirl outfit". :D Considered a Nork, but there's a lot of things I'd want to upgrade and I've heard of stupid little things failing like pins and such. Also the upper to lower fit looks horrible.....

Upper lower fit were fine on mine the only issue i had was on my first one I went to replace the handguard and i had to do some fitting too make it fit the second one was fine

The AR is top of the black rifle food chain and a combat proven platform. It is used by many armys and the most elite combat units around the world. The AR only sucks only on the internet, for some reason guns turn into POS once they are talked about in inter web land :p

As for piston ARs...... well if you want one because its the cool thing to do, then fill your boots. IMO there not worth the trouble and if you want a piston 5.56mm get a Swiss Arms.

'Course you also buy the Norc, throw on a Adams Arms piston kit (Arms East carries them) on it, throw an optic and or irons on it, find out if you like the AR scene or not, and start saving for a Daniel Defence (gas), LWRC (piston), or HK (piston).

Just throwing out the idea. I've put thought, was going to build my own rifle (first plan of action), then I thought I'd go with a Norc to play with (second plan), then I decided to go with a Daniel Defence DDM4v5 (third). Now I'm looking a M305 (M14 type gun) in a Blackfeather stock (uses AR stocks and pistol grips) (fourth idea, now I need money before I come up with a fifth idea).

Well, MOA is probably possible with luck and handloading or spending lots of money and handloading. Something like an Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply AT-15 should be able to do it for the money you're spending on it.

As for affordable, the DPMS Oracle seems to be getting some good reviews.

However, if you're looking for a cheap option you can probably get away with a used Norc for <$500, or buy a M305 for the about the same money. Whichever tickles your fancy more.

You mention wanting a short barrel but seeing longer ones reasonably priced, the beauty of AR is that you can buy that longer barreled one and in about fifteen seconds pop off that upper receiver and trade/sell it to someone else for a shorter barrel one. All of the major brands should work together, but some of the more "precision" ones have tighter fits than stuff like a Norc. In general though they should all work together.

I have a Daniel Defense M4 V5 right now and I'm planning on spending a year or two building a second one from scratch and each and every part should be able to switch back and forth. I'm divided between a SBR or DMR, can't decide, probably going to end up with uppers for both.

Not meaning to high jack a thread but it may help us both.

Is it difficult to buy a used restricted firearm?

I have a longer .308 and would love to add a .223 to the safe but don't want to spend a lot of cash. I just want something to play with in between "groups"

No big deal. Buyer and seller call CFO and give their information. Then sit on your ass for several weeks until the 10th time you call they say: oh it was approved two days ago. Buyer gets ATT to go to Canadapost and sends the package. You get it.

Is MOA not a reasonable expectation from an AR? As I said before, I shoot a Robinson XCR as a hunting gun and it's sub MOA in both 223 and 6.8....

Reasonable expectation from a 10.5" or 12.5"? Might happen but there's a reason snipers don't use 10.5" barrels on their guns. MOA is a pretty high expectation for a short barrelled AR. 2-3 MOA is more realistic. If u want MOA probably want to look at 16"-24" barrel. I'm by no means an expert but it seems most guys that want accuracy opt for 20-24". Must be a reason.

MOA is totally possible with a Noveske SS short barrel. You just need match ammunition, a good trigger and a magnifed optic. If you buy a cheap, or standard CL short barrel, then expect 2-4" with a red dot, at best.

I'd say look at the DPMS Oracle if price is a concern and you're unsure of getting a norc. Mine has really nice machining and a pretty good upper/ lower fit. I'm no AR expert but I think with most non-high end AR's you'll want to spend extra on a better trigger if accuracy is a big concern.

One ex military type told me that the AR was designed to hit a man sized target at 200 yards/meters.

No doubt with better AR platforms out there, you can do better. The shorter barrels were designed for close quarters combat. So trying to take them out past 50 yards (my own opinion here......) would be kinda pointless for real accuracy.
