I am actually 17 but I have already completed the restricted firearms course +non-restricted firearms course
I will be 18 in May
I am trying to educate myself where should I start?

Read more.. Ask questions AFTER you have used the search function to no avail... Forget everything you have ever seen in a movie... or a TV show...

Oh, and don't lick the floor... Its bad for you....

Read...read until your eyes bleed from the searing, white hot light of your monitor.

I spend way too many hours on this site just trolling around, reading up as much as I can. Then, if I can't find what I'm looking for, I post and ask a question.

Also, join a range/gun club in your area. You'll get the opportunity to meet some great people and possibly make some new friends. Since joining my local club I've met some great people and they've already taught me a TONNE of stuff I never knew before.

Oh...and when they're telling you something, listen and learn from their experience. I have a bad habit of thinking I know everything...and that generally makes me look like an idiot who knows nothing. I have learned to listen and I learn a hell of a lot more!

And as Merlin said...forget everything you "learned" from TV, Movies and Video Games. That is not knowledge...it's just entertainment. I may be able to pop headshots in Rainbow Six like a pro...but I certainly can't in IDPA!

You can learn some stuff here on CGN, but beware there's a lot of crap floating around too. Some of the "experts" here were new guys like yourself a few short months ago, but transformed themselves into experts just by reading on this site. Unfortunately they give really bad advice sometimes.

By all means visit this site and read. But remember that 1 hour of practical experience is worth more than 10 hours of reading about someone else's experiences.

Also, join a range/gun club in your area.
I don't think I can join the range yet with no license and gunz and not being 18.
One quick question what is the difference between a sniper rifle and a hunting rifle?
I mean they both have a scope?

Join the US NRA and start reading the magazine each month. Buy the books etc that they have for sale. They have been at it for a long time. I am a life member of the NRA and have found that they can always teach you something.

there is nothing diff about a sniper and a hunting rifle, to the government though a "sniper rifle" is all black and scary looking lol there dumb though.

according to wiki:

In military and law enforcement terminology, a sniper rifle is a rifle used to ensure accurate placement of bullets at longer ranges than small arms. A typical sniper rifle is built for optimal levels of accuracy, fitted with a telescopic sight and chambered for a military centerfire cartridge. The term is often used in the media to describe any type of accurized firearm fitted with a telescopic sight that is employed against human targets, although "sniping rifle" or "sniper's rifle" is the technically correct fashion to refer to such a rifle.

according to me:
nothing, there both the same, they both place shots accurately and at short to long distances, the only diff to me is the target and the shooter.

one last thing, the other way to learn things is to not just go to the range, and read $hit on here, but do the research yourself, i do a lot of my own research, partly because i don't believe a lot of what i read and because i learn better that way. wikipedia is my friend but so is Google. its a great tool so use it well.

ps. guys not everybody can just up and join a range, im broke and the fee at my closest range is 200$, and im also only 17 but 18 on oct 15. i know only one person who has guns that the'll let me play with.

good luck nate

Just too much harsh welcome to the guy , anyway ,be patient and stay in touch and time will fly and have some one sign up for you and you can get PAL even underage.Be safe and stay out of trouble, if you start likeing rifles at the age of 17 , you can be expert by 71 and quite knowledgable.

Welcome to the club...I'm a relative newb myself but I'm 30...

Now that I'm also a father. I'm here trying to learn more about the political activism to save our beloved sport so maybe one day my son can go shooting with me...

All the above advice is good just make sure to double check anything that may have legal attachments...most guys here have posted various links to government webs sites for any nitty-gritty details in that regard.

Thanks for joining the battle...grab a helmet and hold on!!!

You don't have to have a PAL to join a range. I didn't have my PAL when I joined my range. In fact, you don't have to have a PAL to shoot either. You just need one to legally own/transport/purchase a firearm and own/transport/purchase ammunition.

But in order to shoot without a PAL, you need to know someone who is nice enough to take you to a range and/or the boonies and let you shoot their guns.

Pretty much all my friends don't have a PAL but I'm a nice guy and I offer to take them up to shoot all the time. Trying desperately to get them into the sport because we need as many new gun nuts as we can get!

"...where should I start?..." Your local public library. Most have lots of firearm related books. Read 'em all.
"...nothing diff about a sniper and a hunting rifle..." Um, no. Scoping a hunting rifle doesn't make it a sniper's rifle. Sniper's rifles are heavily modified for extreme accuracy. High end target rifles are close. Heavy match grade barrel, trued receiver, trigger job, really good sights, etc. Hunting rifles they ain't.
"...Wikipedia..." Isn't a good place for accurate info. Anybody with Internet access can post there. A lot of Internet nonsense gets repeated there.
"...not everybody can just up and join a range, I'm broke..." That isn't an age thing. There's a lot of being broke going on these days. Poverty sucks at any age. You don't join a range. You join a club.
The clubs will not allow a minor to become a member without a parent joining too. Has to do with liability. If you get hurt, in any way, they can't just haul you off the the ER to be re-assembled without a parent/guardian's permission.
