Eductate me. black bear bait barrels

If you are using a chain to attach to a tree, use a couple swivels. Will be much easier to un kink the chain later. Also use stout equipment. The bears south of Sudbury stole our first barrel this year, lol. Pulled a cheapie quick link apart by brute force and left with the prize….

I am wondering which Year was it made illegal in BC ?

I started hunting in BC in 1972 and it was already illegal then to Bait for Black as well as Grizzly Bears.

Before coming to BC I lived and hunted in northerrn Manitoba and remember Trappers where still allowed to Bait for Black Bears. The newly Government issued Trappers Handbook recommended using Diesel Fuel to call the Bears from long distances and then Trappers used Beaver at the actual Trap set.

Early 70's I think. Black Bears also went from no bag limit, no closed season to having season, limits and tags.
 
I use a ratchet strap to attach barrel to tree. One big 16”x16” hole about half 45% up. Never had a problem with either. Beavers hung in trees are dynamite. Painted my barrel John Deere green, huge improvement over black barrel, black bear at last light. If sat cams are good for anything, it’s keeping your scent out of a bear bait, highly recommend!

Good hunting. Can’t wait to get out there this spring. Will be my wife’s first spring bear hunt.
 
I also use a laundry line style cable looped through two holes in the bottom of the barrel and around the nearest fixed object. I'm only able to check baits once a week, the smaller holes help make the bait last a little longer.
 
Open top barrels are the easiest to fill. If you're doing a smaller bait that you won't get to often, a smaller barrel with a few 1 inch holes filled with dry dog food will last quite a while. Make sure they can knock it around to get bait out. Beavers work good. Drag a beaver all through the area then back to the bait site to get them to find it. Old cooking oil and oats are good first thing in the spring. Had good luck with the bear bomb aerosols. I always left a dirty work shirt in the treestand when I wasn't there. Seemed to make them used to my scent. Have fun.

If I was going into a known bear habitat dragging a dead beaver on a rope behind me, I'd want to have something from the recommended "Best Bear Defence Gun" thread over my shoulder.
 
Plant ahhhh plumb tree.
I know my naybore in Lewpyland had five awf them berpull plum trees in hizz back yard.
I could smell'im frum me sundeck.
When dem frewt hit maw terre, dem brewins noze wuzz sure tuh fawllow.
 
Look for a local pub/restaurant that has a used cooking oil tank out back.
The one I use has a drain valve on the bottom of it that I fill up windshield washer jugs with.
If your not into that hassle, buy jello strawberry powder mix, its a $1 a box and easy to carry.
Just scatter a box or two of it around on the ground every time you go to the site, or mix it with water if your into humping jugs around.
Pour the concoction on the ground around the bait site for them to trail scent through the bush.
 
A lot of guys around here will use garbage bags full of popcorn and cheap dog food in their barrels, throw on a bit of used cooking oil like the others have suggested
 
You don't need anything overly elaborate. This is just an ordinary blue barrel with dry dog food as bait. Big logs on top to keep the little critters from cleaning me out. I added molasses and cooking oil, but I'm not convinced the latter did any good. Once the bears start hitting it you need to get in there every other day to top up the bait.

If you can't get in regularly to rebait you might want to consider a trickle feeder.

drill and bolt 4 car tires together ...screw plywood bottom on one end...assemble on site for ease of transport ....dump in whatever just lots of small things ...they will spend hours with a paw in there trying to dig out a tid bit..........lasts for years and hard to steal or even move off site......just mid size car tires ...wire mesh is good instead of the plywood end....good luck don...... like the michelin man
 
No name powdered chocolate milk mix is a decent additive to bait barrel food, lot of scent to it.
Bait wise, use whatever you can get, it can get pricey if a person gets carried away.
Even the cheapest dry dog food ads up when using barrels full of it.
