Effective Range .204 VS .223

angrysoldier, you are using the right ammo for what you are doing. you don't want to be shooting 556 much past 300,you want that stuff going sideways the minute it hits your target. use your 338 LOTS and keep us safe. Thanks for your service.

How the hell do you guys see a gopher sized target at 600 yards anyway?!! That's a loooooong way for a 4X6 card sized target.......:D

Having said that I'd still go .223

????

ive shot 556 out to 600 meters and past 300 you cannot trust it not to tumble. the other cal im not sure about it. but ive fired many thousands of 556 and i dont trust it past 300 meters.

I too have fired thousands of 556 rounds and I don't know what's wrong with your East Coaster air but our Ontario C7's and C8's aren't having any problems with tumbling. I have never seen a round go in sideways on a target, not even with a c9 at 800-1000m. And I have spent equal time behind the weapon or at the butts patching targets.

i work out of the infantry school in gagetown. our rifle are about halfway through their bores. as i said we dont trust them past 300 meters. 400 -500 on a good day.

Not surprising. With the amount of cleaning and beating battle school rifles see, I'd say if IVI is tumbling past 300m, those bores are done. Still great for training, but I wouldn't send them to CFSAC.

You guys are seeing tumbles on a c-7 with ivi past 300m? How are your bores?...

x2

I suspect the issue might be attributed to the Crown.

LOL, yeah the crowns usually get quite a working over.
With the amount of improper cleaning and general treatment rifles receive at that level its a suprise they shoot well inside 300m....

I use my .223 savage bull barrel rifle up to 500 yards (only asvailable range) with no problem. My scope is a weaver t-36 so I can see quite well. I've shot a gallon water bottle at that range 3 out of 4 times with lapua match ammo

Can someone tell me what a C-7 and a C-8 is? Are they anything like the FN-C1 and the FN-C2?
I see we have a chap from Petawawa here. I was there for Battle School in 82'. I don't think my body could handle the pepper podding any more.
As far as the .204 and the .223 go, they are both great varmint choices but the .223 will be more reliable at longer ranges.
