What would be the acceptable effective range on coyotes using a .22 with CCI Mini Mags or Velocitors? I could probably shoot a few coyotes around some cattle pens and was wondering what distance the old .22 would be good out to.

velocitors really impressed me, i'll say 75 yards if you can group well enough with those, have at least a 20'' barrel for velocity, and you have a good head/lung shot. Further would be pushing it IMHO.

I have shot about a dozen with a 22lr and velocitors in the past couple of years from 25 to 100yards, most have been lung shots and usually I try to put 2 or 3 rounds in them to shorten the recovery distance. I try to restrict my shots to 75 yards even when useing a 22wmr. I will say that I have had mixed results with rimfires as yotes are very tough but most dropped with in about 80yards. Obviously if the range was short a head shot would be ideal, around buildings a rimfire is often the only option but they work well as long as you pick your shots. Have fun.
You should be okay inside of 75 yards with Velocitors if you're just using your .22LR to protect your livestock when they're threatened. Otherwise, if you were setting up a platform to hunt coyotes, I'd jump up to one of the 'varmint' centrefire cartridges. I have no problem with guys that run out of the farmhouse with a rimfire rifle in hand to drive off a nuisance coyote or fox...my in law's have done it for years. It's when you get into the calling/hunting aspect that you want to use a more highly effective platform.
