Effective range of shotgun on Deer/Red dot vs scope

I shot my first deer with red dot. Removed it after that. Didn't like it. Cheek weld sucks on a shot gun without a Monte Carlo raised stock or some sort of comb raising kit. I used the neoprene bear Creek kit.

I now shoot fiber optic sights only front and rear and keep my shots under 75 yards.

I do not remember if I had one or two eyes open (it was 25 years ago), I just remember it appeared significantly darker through the red dot compared to a scope. I now use a few Leupold VXR models for the best of both options. WK

Hmmm. One of my favorite things about the red dots is being able to keep both eyes open to maintain your peripheral vision, while still “painting” an aiming dot on your target. Due to having both eyes open, I never found an issue with light gathering. Theyre great for thick Bush and deer drives, especially running dogs. Keeps your situational awareness up to make sure Fido or another deer doesn’t suddenly run in front of you when you’re about to pull the trigger.

Not a great choice for spot and stalk or stand hunting though. Then you have a few more seconds to appraise the situation, and some magnification is nice.

Im looking into the VXR. Though I won't use the trs25 for primary hunting sight its insanely fun and quick to use on a 1022. It still works though I won't accept something I had a (minor) issue with on a hunt.

Having a good low power scope with a dot option has to be nice, especially for a smoothbore that is gonna shoot birds as well.

I think you will like the vxr I had one for a few years.very good scope. I did not like the on off switch.. to many pushes to turn off and on as you have to go through all the brightness range to get it to turn off.i would rather have a on off switch and brightness dial.. still a very nice scope
