Effed up my sks front sight tonight....

Well, long story short, i completely screwed up the front sight post on my sks tonight.

I was trying to remove the front sight post to install a thinner one, and just went ape scat on it. It wouldn't budge, couldn't fit any tools in the hole in the top of the sight. Busted out the angle grinder and that's when things got real ugly.

SO im in the market for a whole new front sight. Anyone have experience with the trueshot from hical? Does it work with the stock rear sight? Does it work with hicals new peep? Are there any other front sights on the market?

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when Jerry shaves some wayward chest hair, then can't/doesn't stop and ends up regretingly shaving it all off unintentionally. Lol!

Yep, el34, you hit the nail on the head with that one.

Unfortunately my computer savvy buddy with the camera couldn't make it up here tonight, so pics tomorrow maybe.

Maybe the op is off for a wartak and scope to fit? Still think the sight adjustment tools work but I will try the file off as suggested by Beermaker. Hammers away!

Filing the corners on the sight tool is a must, for the cheapie ones at least. This allows the tool to actually allow the sight pin to pass freely in the relief hole. The sight hood gets in the way. The sight pin was bolcked from moving on mine and luckily I noticed this problem before my ham hands broke the tool. Do both sides.

For the cheapskates who want a tool that will last forever. Buy a pack of the Canadian Tire screwdrivers that are just about always on sale for 60% off. Nobody actually uses hand screw drivers any more so cut the biggest one off a couple of inches from the handle, drill a small hole about 10-15 mm into the end and then make the slot with a dremel and cut off disc. Make two in case you can't find the one you made to post a picture of...

Thanks to beermaker for the useful tip, I'll be sure to grind out that spot when i get another sight tool.
And thanks to hical for the tempting offer, but I think i'll keep working on it till i fix it. A member here has sent me a tool for removing the whole sight/bayo assembly, so i think ill have a look at your guys ak-style front sight. Does it work with the new peep?

Also, i now have pics. How do i post em?

Upload them to photobucket, then post the link here, would be the easiest way. Or if you want them to show up in your post, do the photobucket thing, then click on this part on the right side of the photobucket page for that particular picture:

When you click on that it'll copy the link. Then click on the icon that looks like a window in the bar above your post on CGN. It looks like this:

Paste that link in there, click the ok button and you should be good to go. It'll come out looking something like this:

Or something like that...:yingyang:....I'm not great at tutorials...

Ah so! It is all so clear to me now.

Well, here we go. It's not so bad...really.

Nice job on that. Now the threaded part of the post is split to allow it to grip outwards against the threads in the drum. It's already half way to having 2 separate bits. Use your dremel to carefully grind down until you hit the split. Once you have 2 pieces in there it will likely still be argumentative but you will have a chance. Soak it with penetrating fluid too as the 50 years of it never moving plus it could be staked too. Shouldn't be but might be. Once it's ground down you may be able to use a good flat blade screwdriver to un screw it. After that you could grin it flat to the drum and then just drive the windage drum out. This would also need to to use the edge of a flat file to get it down to the drum. Actually it looks like you are down to the split threads but clean it up to ensure you have 2 separate pieces.

Hint on the pictures, you can save the pictures in a slightly smaller format i.e. web large or small and they won't be quite so BIG. OR crop out the area outside of the area of interest.

You can't tell due to poor picture quality, but the post is already in two seperate pieces. I tried sticking a flat bladed screw driver in there, and they will spin, about maybe 1/4 turn, but after that, they jam. I even went out and bought a very small pair of vice-grips, clamped em on, and still no luck. I don't know what the hell it's hung up
on, but it is hung up good. I have had the front post soaking in penetrating oil for days. Repeated applications.
I'm gonna think about grinding down the post and driving out the windage drum. After all this i'm a little wary of grinding things heh heh.

EDIT: apologies for the massive pics, my compu-jitsu is a little rusty

Just paste the IMG link in the reply box.

No need to paste it inside the photo attachment icon.

So basically they are free if the 2 half's spin. Does it look like they have been staked to prevent turning? They will be separate pieces like an old cloths pin. You may have to squeeze them together and turn perhaps a small pair of needle nose pliers. Unfortunately the opening is small enough that you may not be able to pull them out individually.

They should be completely free. They are two seperate halves, just like an old clothes pin. I cannot see any evidence of staking, but they must be somehow, because they will not move. I even used the edge of a flat file to widen the space between them, so i could squeeze them together and still nothing.

Now you are coming in with the screw driver from the top Eh? I know but I have experienced the unexplainable. You know that Doh moment. Hopefully the internal thread haven't been damaged, a gentle squeeze and turn or some crap is on the thread that need a bit of ungooing. Like lighter fluid to dissolve some crap. Use a really small jeweler screw driver or equivalent to clean the gap between the 2 halves down into the drum. Worst case is to file/grind flush with the drum and just drift it out. It wouldn't take mush with a small grinding stone on a dremel. Then you could see what is happening underneath. The threads go straight through the drum so hopefully the post hasn't been screwed in and out the other side.
