Anybody ever had an issue with their SA-08 ejecting 7 1/2 shells with velocities in the 1200 fps range? Mine does from time to time and was wondering if there is a solution?

Can you provide more info .are the shells sticking in the chamber ? Or is the action closing with shell sticking out side ways .

It does both but I would say mostly the latter. Although I haven't had an opportunity to try a waterfowl hunting load in it since this issue started I'm pretty sure they'll recycle/eject. I'll try that early next week, though, to make sure they do.

Is the piston and mag tube clean and lightly oiled . next thing to check is the chamber look for burs or heavy fowling as above give the chamber a good cleaning/polishing .also check the barrel ports to see they are clear .last but not least inspect the action spring/tube located in the stock .

And what piston is that ?
Have you tried to polish the chamber ???
Remington 870 sp had issues, check google for fiys mods.

I think I mentioned above that I've got the correct piston in there for lighter loads. The whole gun (action, magazine tube, and barrel) has been cleaned and lubed again. Gas ports have been checked. Pretty sure the reason it has the issue is because of what it says on P. 22 of the manual where it states that you need at least 1200 fps shells. The problem is all my trap/skeet loads are 1145-1200 fps but that being said, my buddy's SA-08 seems to cycle them just fine, plus the ons that I have that are rated 1200 fps should theoretically work.

I hope to try the gun at the range again tomorrow to see if anything has been changed. The one thing I haven't checked is the action spring located in the stock. If I still have an issue the next time I'm shooting these trap loads I'll check it.

Mine worked well with 1 1/8 oz 1145 fps (2 3/4 dram equivalent) target shells. If your shells are only 1 oz and 1145 fps then that may be the problem but 1 1/8 oz loads should work fine.

The Winchester shells are 1200 fps but only 1 oz., the Score shells are 1145 fps but are 1 1/8 oz.

What I may try is the next time I go to the range with my buddy, who has the same gun, we can switch our pistons with each other. It will be one more thing to eliminate to solve the issue. If my piston works fine in his gun I'll know that's not the problem.

Exchanging pistons may not give you the answers you need because you are only comparing how these pistons fit. It appears that you are skirting the fringe of reliability in this particular gun by trying to use the lightest recoiling ammunition you can find and your final solution will likely be to try different loads until you find a compromise that works. Bear in mind, when cold weather arrives this problem will brobably increase.

The thing is I'm not trying to find lighter recoil loads. When you buy trap loads by the case they all seem to come in 1 - 1 1/8 oz. loads so you really don't have any other choice.

As mentioned, When I'm hunting water fowl all my loads, whether BB's, 2's or 3's are all 1550 fps so i don't expect to have any ejection issues with these. I didn't last year anyway. I use my 20 ga. O/U for all upland hunting where I use lighter loads.

As stated above, your gun is on the ragged edge of cycling with some loads. The difference between your gun and your buddies gun is friction - yours has more. This may be due to lack of lube, "newness", or manufacturing variance. If the gun is low mileage, then there is a good chance the situation will improve as the gun wears in. Some manufacturers advise that the gun needs to be broken in with 100 heavy loads to get it to cycle reliably. I suppose you could emulate that to some degree by cycling the gun in front of the TV...
In addition, ammo from different manufacturers with the same specs for velocity and charge weight will perform differently wrt cycling. If you are running into chronic problems with one type of ammo, it may be prudent to switch. BTW - The standard promo target load is 1 1/8 oz and 1200 fps. Both loads that you mention would offer less recoil energy (~10 %) than the standard load.

My gun cycled 1 oz loads with no problems and that was when the gun was new and not broken in so I think there is an issue with you gun especially when your buddies gun doesn't have the same problem. Sometimes a gun won't like a particular type of hull but I haven't found one that won't cycle through mine yet, all in all mine has been very reliable with anything I've put through it so I think there is something else going on.

Took my shot gun to the skeet range today after giving it another thorough going over and 23 of 25 of each of two boxes of Score 7 1/2s (1 1/8 oz. 1145 fps) ejected but none of the Winchester 1 oz. 7 1/2 box that I tried did (1180 fps) so looks like I'll have to use the rest of those at the trap range and manually eject them.
