Ejector/Extractor

What is the difference between the new side ejector to the earlier internal one and is one preferred over the other. Noticed that you can buy say a 1911 with them or without. ?? What gives?

Extractor, not ejector, thats the blade on the left side of the frame that tosses the brass the extractor pulls out. The old style are a single piece that use a curve or bend to create spring tension and hold the case. The new (exterior ones) use a spring and a hook on a pivot point. The old style work fine most of the time but when they get tired they can be a bit of a black art to get working again. As much as I like the appearance of the slide without the modern extractor, If I was to buy a new 1911, thats the design I'd want.

lots of people seem to be thrilled that kimber went back to an internal. i haven't had a single problem with my external one, tho i like the looks of the internal better

Agreed. The theory on the exterior ones is that you get a more "maintainable" extractor - as it now has springs you can replace as opposed to figuring out if the bend and heat treatment is still the best.

That said, 90+ years of "bent style" extractors have faired pretty good. Once tuned, a good quality one lasts a long time.
