Ejectors / Extractors?

In an O/U or other break action shotgun the ejectors will "eject'' the spent shell fully clear of the breech, whereas extractors will just partially "extract" or lift the shell from the breech for easy removal by hand.

Extactors are fine for field guns as you don't have to pick up the empties in the field. I had a SxS with ejectors and had to cover them with my hand to prevent the empties from flying.

when hunting, extractor for me

That is the important point right there.

When hunting with a single shot or an over-under, the extractor is better (in my opinion). You can just grab your empty(ies) and stick it in your pocket and reload another.

The ejector sends your shell flying and much time is spent rummaging on your hands and knees (sometimes in tall grass) looking for your empties. Sometimes this results in missed opportunities since you should be looking up and around and not staring down at your feet.

Happy hunting

In the over and under shotgun what do they mean and what is the pros/cons.
when they say ejectors or extractors??

Most higher quality O/U's and Double shotguns have selective ejection. That is to say when you open the firearm and there are shells in it, only the fired shell is ejected and the unfired shells remain in the chamber held slightly out by the extractor. That part does both extraction and ejection when required by the mechanics of the firearm.

Guns that have extractors only, do not eject any shells at any time, they simply lift them part way out of the chamber.

Ejection is nice for quick reloading.

I've never understood why some manufacturers install ejectors that work all the time even with a live shell. Extractors that just raise the hull/shell are less expensive and make more sense.

My guns have ejectors but I don't find it a problem to put my hand over the hulls to retrieve them. But when we break a covey of birds the ability to be able to eject the hulls and quickly reload comes in handy.

If the ejector is ejecting all the time on unfired shells something is wrong within the trip mechanism for the ejector.

I have never seen a shotgun that was supposed to eject all the time.

I should say I have never seen an O/U or S x S shotgun that was supposed to eject all of the time....

Some of the cheaper single-shots will do this. Perhaps there was something wrong with them but I recall handing an H&R survival type shotgun (Tamer?) that ejected the live round each time it was opened.

I wasn't thinking single shots... I was in the two barrel mode...

"...you don't have to pick up the empties in the field..." You should. Plastic takes eons to break down and your momma usually doesn't go hunting with you to clean up your mess.

Read his post again. It's obvious that what SC meant was he liked extractors because he didn't have to pick up his empties when they are thrown out of the gun and on the ground by ejectors.

That's exactly what I meant. :)
