Hey guys-figured this might be the best place to ask.. I've developed some issue with my right elbow, work-related. (machining plastic, repetitive action x several thousand) Getting that looked at in the next 2-3 weeks, but I'm mindful of my spring varmint-hunting plans, and think I ought to be considering an elbow pad of some kind. Only need one, and my attempts at making hardware-store items work in my sport-shooting=about 50% success. lol

Don't need anything tactical of course, but wondering if any of you have a suggestion? I have big arms, don't want it digging in because the elastic band or straps are too small/tight. By "big", I mean just that...not implying muscular. lol

Thanks for taking a moment to reply.

You could try sliding a thin pad under a sports sleeve like they use in rugby or cricket. The athletes wear them to prevent grass burns when diving for a ball on turf.

OP have you checked Amazon? Lots of options, some harder like roller skating pads, some softer like MMA sparring elbow pads.

If you really want to go on the cheap, Value Village usually has an assortment of elbow pads for roller skating, hockey pads, etc.

I’ve used the gel type elbow pads for left elbow in prone shooting to good effect.

Another option if you’re shooting from a prepared position vs improvised is one of those dark brown hemp like door mats from a hardware store. I’ve heard them called “cocoa” mats but I don’t know what that material is actually called. Would place one of those under the elbow section of my roll out mat when shooting from either a concrete pad or really coarse gravel and they worked well. Cheap too.

soft closed cell foam 4 or 6 inch thick
scraps from a foam mattress outlet
just lay on the ground or the bench

be careful not to screw it up further until u get it looked at my friend

I use volley ball pads. ("Borrowed" them from one of my kids). - dan

I tried elbow pad’s, right elbow has been through cattle, dirtbike, racing bike, and ice fishing incidents.

I ended up using kinesiology tape. If Maynard see’s this post, he might even have a picture handy of me doing it.

If it you’re set on elbow pads. Imo someone already said it. Use volleyball pads.

Have you tried laying on your back, roll 45deg to the right, heels up to your bum, lay the barrel on crossed shins, tuck stock under shoulder, and look down?

It keeps the weight off your arms and the snow out of your face.

You end up adjusting point of aim mostly with your legs and they're surprisingly stable.

First off-thanks to everyone who replied. Very much appreciated! I did find this type when looking around online yesterday, and would like to think something that thin/flexible (looking) might be a good option;

Regarding this suggestion;

Try shooting off a tripod if you don’t already. Game changer out shooting gophers.

I've seen photos of rifles on tripods, but I have no experience using them. I remember seeing the BOG pod (sp?) posted a couple of years back, that looked very robust, but cost prohibitive. I'd love to see some photos/links to components if anyone cares to share? I trust that some of these solutions WILL hold a varmint-weight rifle, but I'm more concerned about how steady I will be. I don't have a ton of faith that I'll be able to stand/steady when behind a gun on a tripod. What stance do you use? Does the shooter lean on the tripod at all? Would be an advantage I would think..?

This thread was sort of tied to a potential gopher trip, a type of varmint shooting where imperfect shots are the norm. lol (distance, wind, .22LR only for me, etc.) In other words, wouldn't be too tough to convince myself it would be good for that. Longer range/groundhog stuff here with the centerfire? Not as confident.

Great thread, I have broken 'elbow ends' where they are hollow. hurts to even rest them wrong on the foam car elbow rests..

small old school skateboard ones with the plastic caps are decent... the quality ones were made by 'Rector'

I use cheapie foam elbow pads and expensive knee pads for my match practice. My joints have suffered and continue to be abused by decades of work and some exercise. If it was for a gopher shoot and I could afford it, I would buy a high end tripod and make sure my rifle had and ARCA rail.
