Elbow pads for shooting prone?

Some minimalist shooting mats (like the Tab gear one I have) have a piece of closed cell phone sewn in across the mat for your elbows to go on. Another option is just a regular Cabela's shooting mat or a cheap foam sleeping pad.

Tripods are a whole other can of worms and can go from 100 bucks or so up to $1500+. What you should get depends on budget and needs. The better tripods allow you to easily (with practice) hold 1 moa standing.

For an elbow rest, prone on a mat, or on the bench, I use a Caldwell lead sled bag, standard size, filled with plastic beads. It comes empty. Plastic beads (filler pellets) can be found online fairly cheap, or in craft stores for stuffing bean bags.

If the bag with plastic beads gets soaked if shooting in the rain, it can dry out quick and won't rot away like a stuffing with rice or something organic. The plastic beads deform to your elbow and cushion it, and are not as hard as sand, and the bag is lighter for transport than a sand bag.
