ELCAN Repair

I was just wondering if it is posible to either:

A> Take the ELCAN apart for cleaning? (I have a used one and it has some black dust around the reticle)

B> Send it somewhere for cleaning?

The tritium has died (if it was there in the first place). I found the round port on the bottom under the mount that I believe is an access port.

Any help appreciated.

P.S. the thing works perfectly and holds zero fine, I am just curious if I can get rid of the "dust". If it goes to the factory, "re charging " the tritium may be an option, but not if it costs more than I paid for the scope.

You probably have one of those "moive prop" that was built on junk tubes, which was explicitly said that there would be no warranty and please do not send back to my shop for repair, because they were sold as junk in the first place.

Wolfgang at Wolverine Supplies said he could tell me if it's "real " ELCAN (I think it is) by the serial number.

That, and he says I can get the tritium recharged for $180 CDN plus shipping and GST.

If it's a real ELCAN, it might be worth it if they can get the shmeg off the reticle at the same time.

It's only cost me $200 (what I paid for the Surefire RAS I traded for it.)

IF it's a knock off tho, screw it. It holds zero, I can live with a little shmeg!

It will be a futile exercise to call Armament tech but you can try if they ever return your phone call.

there were a bunch of 'movie prop' elcans sold, they are still real elcans but just made from junk parts that can't be fixed (i.e. broken mounts that don't hold zero, old tubes, old covers). does your rubber cover have an 'A' etched into the rubber or does it have some sort of red/green paint scheme? if so armament tech definitely will not be nitrogen purging it or refilling the tritium. this scope held zero up to how far?

Elcans

The C79 cannot be taken apart for cleaning...the optics are "bonded" (glued) to the tube. There is no way to clean the reticle. If you are seeing spots...sometimes as bad as looking through a screen door, that is because the reflective coating on the prisms are substandard but were accepted by the army anyway...only to be removed from service by tech in the units who didn't like their friends having substandard equipment. Many C79 optical tubes went to surplus before Elcan found out about it and got the army to crush the tubes before surplussing them. As for the Tritium, if you really want to go to that expense, make sure that they recharge the tube with dry nitrogen or it will fog up. As for the zero retention problems, the mounts can be easily repaired....if you DIY watch out...lots of very small ball bearings.
