Electric Mountain Bike?

Had a neighbour who back in the 20's or 30's rode his bike from my hometown to the hometown of his sweetie, which is about 60+ miles away. He rode there and back in 1 day, and told my dad that he didn't see a car the whole trip! Tough old bugger, who's still kicking at 105. Just had his birthday back in January.

Was out to breakfast with some buddies last month and one of them is into electric bikes. He was saying that there's a guy out of Victoria or Vancouver who made an electric bike that he got up to 60 mph on. When the police pulled him over, he thought he was done for, but the cops told him that they wanted to buy his bike for mounted patrols...Imagine trying to outrun a cop who can do 60 mph (even if it's just a short sprint) and just not having the ooph to keep on running?

I don't have the link for the 60 mph bike, but buddy was also saying that for $4000 he could get a fatbike that was electric and that he wanted to use it for commuting to downtown Winnipeg where instead of paying for parking all day, he could just lock up the bike for free. An expensive option on saving money, but hey, he's retired and the job is his way of earning "mad money" for his projects.

Aren't the electric bikes "regenerative" where when you pedal they charge the system until you need the electric assist which then kicks in and either gives you a percentage all the way up to 100% electric boost? I'm thinking that a system like that will let you ride all day, then use the assist to get your tired carcass back to camp or the truck. Maybe I'm thinking about something else.

The legality of an electric assisted mode of transportation could be debated in some jurisdictions like Manitoba, but gas motorized transport is strictly illegal in most cases

If it propels itself with an electric motor, it would be considered a motor vehicle in many jurisdictions.

There's some fellas up near where I moose hunt that have one of those electric 4 man golf carts. The quad hunters drive me nuts with all the noise they make, but these guys on the golf cart with soft tires can sneak through the woods like a phantom. They're limited to fairly established trails of course, but for dropping off hunters near their spots prior to a drive, it's danm near perfect.

I've always thought a hybrid quad would sell well to hunters. Make all the noise you want on the road, or when dragging game, but when you wanna be sneaky, just flip the switch to electric. I'd buy one. After I took out a second mortgage on my house, mind you.

I wonder why does everyone and their dog think bicycles are quiet?
I can hear the tires on gravel and the bike kindof rattles on any bump.
Also, huffing and puffing uphill (BC) doesn't really qualify as quiet.

If I can hear these noises, so can the critters from quite a distance.

Gravel is noisy. Dirt, less so.

A decent bike shouldn't "rattle".

But even a huffing, puffing, rattling, gravel crunching bike is 10 times quieter than a quad...

Looks like there is some interest on this subject. I have read a few articles in "Backwoodsman" magazine on outfitting mountain bikes for hunting. Perhaps if a good deal on a used electric bike could be found then a relatively cheap hunting rig could be put together. A comment earlier made about a fellow who used his bike to haul out a deer reminded me of a humorous story by Patrick Mcmanus. I believe it was in a book titled "They shoot canoes don't they? I won't spoil the story but the book is a good read.

Patrick F Mcmanus is also on the youtube. He tells his stories onstage and acts them out as well as one person on stage can. He tells his story about hunting with a bicycle vey well

they sell 4x4 electric side by sides for hunting with good ranges of 30k or better but havent a clue on the price

I've ridden up on moose, bears, deer, even been rode up on myself, theyre no louder than someone ploddkngg along. I think due to the fact the coasting tires aren't a familiar sound to them, I wouldn't think many animals out in the bush assosiate that sound too danger. Ride your bike more if your huffing and puffing, I hear you though abut bc up and down but that's why they have gears, and not to mention horses make all kinds of noises and there an excellent way to see game. Buy a better bike and lube it up/tie everything down better if it rattles.

Me too. And they also don't associate the bike with people. They just can't figure out what kind of critter it is. Not like the tell tale "Putt Putt Putt" of a quad coming down the road with a big brown lump on it they can hear from two kilometres away.

How so?

From the hunting regulations:

A vehicle is any mechanical device propelled or driven by any means other than human power and includes cars, trucks, powerboats, aircraft and off-road vehicles (ORVs).

Deep in the bush riding trails on my quad, many times have seen deer stop & stare, of course not during hunting season..
