Electrical tape on muzzle

I've kept tape on the barrels of all my rifles when hunting for the last few years. never had a problem and never plan to stop. A lot cheaper then touching one off with #$% in the barrel.

Been doing it for eons. My old hunting partener ,who has now passed on ,God rest him, thought me that trick. Whenever you shoot just unrapp some tape and recover the barrel.

There's a lot of rifles out there that are "ringed" close to the muzzle, and the reason thy are ringed is that they were fired with an obstruction in the barrel. Probably just a bit of mud or snow.

I use hockey tape, it sticks better than electrical tape.

I've never bothered.
But I've had a couple of instances that will make you think.
Over 40 years of hunting, I've had two or three. One time, I opened my '94 Winchester removed the chambered round, and a two inch stick slid out behind it.
Then, I was moose hunting, on a large muskeg area. I slipped and fell, burying the barrel of my Browning Stainless Stalker in 338WM in the muck. Thankfully, I noticed that, and had a belt mounted cleaning kit {Otis} with me to remedy that.
Then there was the time I was deer hunting, doing a long drive. It was a thirteen mile walk, as it incorporated three drives into one long walk for me alone. Part way round the lake, the weather changed to freezing rain. My '94 became coated with ice as I walked, the barrel a blob of ice I had to bang off on the trees, so I could see the front sight, the bore, the same, partially covering frequently with ice, even though I kept it aimed at a down angle. (Didn't see anything to shoot at)
When I came out, the guy at the narrows, who didn't know I was coming, (long story) had left, and I had another five miles to walk back to camp in the ice. It was now so slippery I was falling down a lot.

If you're not going to cover the muzzle, you'd best be prepared to deal with stuff, and check it for obstructions regularly.

I've never done it either. And just sitting here thinking, I can't recall ever having seen another hunter with his muzzle taped/covered. And I've hunted in all the western provinces at one time or another.

When I shortened the barrel on my .375 H&H, I had the front sight installed 3/4" back from the muzzle. It makes it easier to tape it when you shoot with iron sights. If you include a couple of extra wraps of tape, you can re-tape the muzzle after you fire a shot.

i use finger cots. the little 'condoms' u put on your finger to keep babdages dry when you have a cut. they work awsome!

...painters tape which leaves no residue on the barrel after being taken off.

That's your ticket right there. I hate anything that leaves the sticky nastiness on my barrels. I find the blue painters tape has some serious sticking power without any after effects.

Duct tape is the best , it won`t fall off like electrical tape or rubber things.
Put a couple wraps on the barrel then you always have extra for the muzzle and one less thing to forget at the truck or at home.

One more for taping. One long piece over the muzzle and two more wrapped around the barrel. After shooting I just lift it off and reuse the same piece, just over a bit. I like electrical tape because it blends in with the barrel. It's less of a flag if I need to move the rifle around at a sensitive time, like painters blue or green would be.

Foam ear plugs

A foam ear plug works pretty well also. Just put it in about half way.

Never tried or thought to try the foam ear plugs. Condoms, electrical tape, duct tape, fingers off cheap rubber/latex gloves.

I've used ear plugs, and also painters tape which leaves no residue on the barrel after being taken off.

I've been told foam ear plugs are a BAD idea - moisture or freezing rain can soak into the foam, and can then freeze into nice, well-sealed, solid plug.

Good old e-tape is hard to top for this.

I do and so does every hunter I know in Northern Ontario. I use cloth camo tape - some use electrical, others masking, others ductape - with enough extra to replace it if a shot is fired. No effect on point of impact The piece of mind from not having to worry about stray branches, ice, water and other bush crap is priceless.
