Electrochemical bore cleaner

Yeah, I did it last summer and got a lot of gunk out of a Steyr M95 carbine. I did it to find out if I could and it was fun for very little expense.
 
I was amazed at the amount of crud that the little improvised rig removed. It really helps if you can fit a funnel or extension to the muzzle, to contain the foam that is produced.

Just try a lower voltage for a longer time and add one drop of a non-ionic wetting agent (such as the blue stuff used in dishwashers to avoid water spots) to the mix. This will stop excessive foaming.

These homebuilt units work well. Don't try to make them work "better" by raising the voltage. If you get the voltage too high you will strip other elements like iron and chromium off the suface of the bore. Instant frosted bore. Off hand I can remember what voltage it takes to do that. It has been some time since I had to do any serious electrochemistry.

Less than 5 volt is a good thing; if you raise the voltage, you'll reach the point where water in the electrolyte will dissociate in oxygen and hydrogen ions; you want to stay below that threshold.
