Just wondering if anyone has used an electronic predator call? A guy I know claims that he and another hunter were trying one out and he had his doubts, they called for about a half hour then gave up and left. Two clicks up the road they cme upon a wolf running at them full bore looking quite tired and winded. Is this typical? sounds like they might work.

Yes, they work. Dogs are funny; sometimes they are out of the woods coming at you on a dead run without needing to be convinced, other times they are weary and don't come in at all.

Mine is a megaphone rigged with a headphone jack and will work with any mp3 player. Varmint Al has lots of good audio clips on his site.

We use mouth calls with very good success. Much cheaper, easier to carry, no batteries, and effective. The electronic ones have the advantage that you can call from where you aren't, but we like to keep it simple, and just don't see any reason to spend the money. So I really can't help with which ones are best.

Two clicks is too far to give credit to the caller. It was just a coincidence.

Right. A wolf, that has run so far that it already looks tired and winded and is two kilometers from the call sight, was running full tilt to the call. Yeah, right. How far are you suggesting that wolf heard and responded if they did the calling for an hour, left, got into the vehicle and saw the animal two kilometers down the road, and it was still on a dead run to the call.

Geeze, people, get real.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize we were dealing with a FoxPro prostaffer or a wildlife biologist specializing in canine ability and behavioral science. I'll bow to your obvious "expertise". Personally I like to keep an open mind to other's experiences rather than call someone out based on my perception of what SHOULD happen or not happen in my own little world and mind. I've never been a wolf so I don't really KNOW just how far they can hear an electronic call (from actual experience, a hell of a lot louder than your hand calls BTW), especially not taking into account the wind or terrain. BUT, if you've been in that wolf's paws or have extensive scientific experience in researching the audible capabilities of canines in the wild and their response radii to a call, then again I'll bow to your obvious superior intellect .

Get real :slap:. Your opinion counts as much as a pinch of coon $hit unless you have some basis for it, otherwise an open mind is the only way to approach a matter. My old man used to say Son, you may know lots and lots of useful stuff but the most important thing you can know is what you DON'T know. Basically, know your own limitations and don't try and bluff expertise based on what you THINK rather than what you actually KNOW.

I agree..I can hear dogs bark from 2 miles away..that's my ears..how do I know this? because I have used my callers with the coyote locator howl.
This call made the neighbours dogs go Nutz, they are tied up in his yard 2 miles away..with no other dogs around for miles.
After I was done I stopped at the neighbours and he said his dogs were going Nutz..so If I can hear them and they can hear the call..I would venture to guess..miles and miles would not be a bad guess for the hearing ability of a wolf.

So you guys actually can set up somewhere and call every canine within "miles and miles" of your set up? All the wolves and coyotes from miles and miles around will immediately begin running in your direction through miles and miles of country, and past thousands of rodents, rabbits, startled deer, old dead cows and whatever, all the while ignoring personal safety, to reach your electronic call cause it sounds so delicious?

You are definitely better than I am. Sometimes, nothing at all comes to my set ups.

If you can show me where we made any such claim I'll eat my shorts. Sometimes, nothing at all comes to an electronic set up either. Nobody claimed they are the end all and be all. Just because an animal may hear the call, whether electronic or hand held, doesn't mean they'll respond to it. They may also respond, but not as aggressively. A more passive, covert response probably happens a lot more often than we know. We think there is nothing coming in just because we can't see them. I'm just guessing, because again I haven't seen them, but I'd guess that more often than not they are coming closer to a set up than we know. However, as you stated, they can be side tracked by a more convenient prey on the way - or they bust us or break off the approach before we even know they are responding. Who knows, maybe they were called in before and have gotten smarter and more leery. Unfortunately for us, there's no magic "Pied Piper" call that guarantees a response from every critter within audible range, not a hand held nor an electronic call will ensure a response. They may very well hear it but hearing and then hearing/responding to are two very different animals.

Did I say that anywhere?? pull your head out of you know where..then come back with something intelligent to say.

sounds like I stirred up a hornets nest here! Let me add that the guy that told me the story is not a bull@%&^er so I do believe what he is telling me.
Also they were set up on the edge of a lake and the road follows the outside perimeter of the lake.

I believe it..mine has two speakers, Prairie blaster..it is loud. Specially down wind..Certainly there are natural sound buffers like trees, hills, fences, buildings, grass, etc..but it is not out of this world to be heard miles away.

One of the benefits I have found with my Foxpro is that it can make sounds that simply can't be done with a hand call. Going back to property where the coyotes seemingly knew the sounds were me and giving them something new has proven to be productive.
