Hi Reloaders

im new to reloading and go myself a Hornady classic kit with the gs-1500 electronic scale. I know it is a basic scale.

I was reloading tonight and my scale was drifting a little bit, 0.2 - 0.3gn. My cup weights 128.5 gn and it drifted to 128.2gn during the reloading session. I was quite pissed because I wanted the 0.1gn accuracy.

How do you manage such a thing? Do you simple press TARE when the empty cup is on the scale and see a drift?

thanks for any comments other then ''buy a 400$ scale'' :dancingbanana:

I have a Frankford Arsenal DS-750. It does the same thing. Its a pain in the ass and slows down the process. I find if u give it a tap or 2 and a little time it usually settles out (different brand than your scale so might not work for you).

Leave your cell phone on the other side of the room or even better would be to leave it in a different room. Also keep your scale away from fluorescent lights as they will also effect the accuracy of a digital scale.
Electronic scales are very sensitive to electrical interference and your phone is one of the worst sources of that interference.

Good luck

that is something I would never have thought. I daughter came in the basement and I had to move my phone closer to my scale, makes sense.

Damn I hope my loads are not screwed!

close the door to your reloading area, if it is in the basement and the stair way is open you are screwed,

when I got my fx120i it would not hold a steady reading and I spoke with a southern drawl lady on the phone for a while,

maybe cause I love the accent of south Carolina,

she told me to do the following,

florescent lights, close all curtains and keep the room fairly dark as opposed to looking out the window into the sun,

close all windows even a little bit, and place a towel at the foot of the door to the rest of the house if the door does not rub on the carpet, and

also to turn the scale down a little as it was set for laboratory standards,

thought she was nuts but it worked and has worked for a couple of years now,

sorry your scale may not be up to using these methods in order to get a .012 reading as you desire

(see I did not say anything about 4010 bucks) (well kinda)

mine does not seem to "drift" also but

after taking the charges off the chargemaster and weighing them on 2 high priced magnetic force restoration scales RCBS SURE DOES NOT WEIGH AS ACCURATELY AS IT APPEARS,

just my thoughts, Jeff

My Rcbs Charge master doesn't drift at all near as I can tell. And rarely does it even need to be calibrated.

The Hornady 1500 is a battery powered scale. It automatically shuts off after 1 minute.
An AC powered scale which does not shut off will drift less.
Suggestions posted by others are also very good.
A room with a stable temperature and no direct sunlight.
No fluorescent lights.
No cell phone.

I have a GS-1500 for a couple of years and it has and still is working just as well as the Hornady electronic bench scale or the RCBS 505 and Ohaus 1010 I have. I keep my scales on a 1/2" piece of tempered glass 18" by 30" it is a pain that it shuts off so quickly but when you turn it on it will tare itself. I also have not had any issues with electronic or light interference.
Both electronic scales are calibrated before I use them and the bench scale stays plugged in.

I cal my electronic scales right before use and don't see much in the way of drift. If I notice it hangs at .1 for more than a quarter second or so when I remove the powder pan, then I know its time to re-zero the scale.
Air currents generated by the reloader moving or from a home heating or air conditioning system will mess with your head. I have also noticed more consistency when my smart phone is either turned off or across the room. They emit radio noise that interferes with your scale.
