Electronic toys and the nature experience

I don't think I could put the time in that I di without my phone. It let's me keep track of business that would otherwise require me to be in front of a computer. Double edged sword I suppose. There are times I can leave the phone behind, and I do, but it does allow me to hunt more now that I can silently communicate with my customers.
Besides, if those guys on that TV show left all the electronics behind, there wouldn't be a TV show.
I enjoy reading the morning news from my stand, let's me get out almost every morning and on the road for work at a normal time, without losing track of my company.
Again, for hunts that require time off from work, the phone is with me, but not used.
For you guys who do take a smartphone, check out the app "fade" it could save your life, it did mine.
 
For me, the point of going hunting is getting away from it all, not taking it all with you. I know it can get boring on stand after a long day of seeing nothing, but if you have your head stuck into a book or electronic game, you aren't paying attention to your surroundings, and you really have no idea what you might be missing. Seeing an animal coming when it's just a movement in the trees can mean the difference in having time to get ready for a shot or not. They don't all just step out and stand waiting for a bullet in the ribs. Playing music would be unthinkable. On several occasions I've heard an animal coming before I could see it, again giving me time to get ready. Not to mention listening for shots from my hunting partners, or the sound of hounds.

The point is, you need to engage all your senses, not only to be successful, but to get the most out of the experience. But if you want to sabotage your own hunt, that's up to you.
 
I admit I stare at my phone a fair bit when bear hunting. Sitting over bait gets boring, But first and last couple hours of the day I don't even look at it, They sneek in too quiet and could ruin my chances if I'm looking down at a game or something...



Deer hunting i will do full day sits and only look at it to get the time or weather forecast. I don't want to miss that big buck cruising mid day looking for does!!

It was kind of neat and fitting that one hunter chose to use a 12 gauge slug for harvest as the shooting distances really fit this scenario. Goes to show you people hunt for different reasons. Some are only interested in the end results and everything else, before and after is boring to them. I have seen a few of them and honestly, I avoid their company. Some other enjoy the whole process of hunting; i.e. preparation for a hunt, company of friends, nature...etc. The latter always go back home happy no matter what. The former, depends on the results.

Besides, in my area, you usually hear game before seeing it. listening to music and reading a book? Not for me.
 
I personally prefer to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature when I am in the woods and think it is up to each individual to chose how they want to enjoy their time on stand, if that is reading a book or listening to music or playing a video game so be it!
 
I usually hunt from elevated tower stands. I turn my phone off. I believe if I see my prey before they see me I have a better chance of success.If my prey sees me first, things get difficult. Hearing is VERY important.
 
It might not make sense but I just like sitting in my stand, however, I like the experience more with a little stimulation sometimes. I don't get in my stand and immediately pop in the ear buds, but if I sit for a couple hours with nothing doin, then they come out. Keep in mind, if our camp has 4 or 5 deer by the middle of the week, I don't even take my gun to the stand, I let my camera do the shooting. (I still hope to use my tag back at home though)
