Just thought I would let you guys know that in Zimbabwe we lost a hunting client (Italian) by the name of Gianpaolo Tarabini. He was trampled to death by a pissed off Elephant. Dont know who the Company he was with but you know that will come out sooner or later. The PH was Claudio Chiarelli. Bet he feels like s**t. He said that there was two of the heathens that was charging but could only take down one. Guess the client must have freaked out. My condolences to the family.

I guess that's why they call it dangerous game. It is sad that such a thing happens, but you have to believe that the hunter knew what he was hunting. I have never heard anyone say that African elephants are easy prey.

The fact that yet another man was killed will add to the allure of dangerous game hunting, and cause yet more brave men to pursue the sport. It has always been thus. There are books and legends written and told about dangerous game, and there will be more yet.

I personally have no desire to hunt elephant, but I sure would like to give M'bogo a try.

Part of me agrees that you should know what you're getting into, but if he's never hunted elephant before he probably had a certain amount of trust in the 'guides'...

but hunting IS hunting... and the wilderness is wild :)

I guess that when you go elephant hunting you had better be sure that you want to find your elephant!

I feel really sorry for his family.

In the DVD I have, Death by Double Rifles, they are hunting for a tuskless cow and come up on a large herd of mainly cows and calves. A young bull on the perimeter of the herd gets spooked by the hunters and does a mock charge, trumpeting and everything. This gets all the other elephants excited and literally a wall of elephants approach the hunters.
They try to back out of there and yell at the elephants but on they come.
Finally a big old cow in the front breaks into a full on charge. It's really a scary looking scene as the guides, trackers, hunter, cameraman are all running backwards trying to get away and they cannot!

At maybe 10 yards the PH drops the cow with a frontal brain shot! It's an amazing scene. If that cow had not been killed it would have killed one of more of the hunters.

The other one I have, Hunting the African Elephant makes me want to hunt them. :)

I have posted this before!!

Italian Designer Killed In Hunting Trip
Gianpaolo Tarabini, 67, who founded the Italian Blumarine firm, was killed by an elephant whilst on a hunting trip in Zimbabwe. Gianpaolo is said to have been in the company of two friends who escaped the attack by two elephants
Gianpaolo’s friends stated that he had a strong affection for Africa, and was an knowledgeable explorer. Gianpaolo who died shortly after the attack requested to be taken back to Carpi.

67 years, the guy lived long enough I guess. I would want the thing to kill me fast...

Yes, always a dream of mine!!
...and I always thought it was because you had something to compensate for...

Anyway, dangerous game hunting is fascinating, although I have no real desire to try it myself

Yup, a hunter shot an elephant, the local authority got some compensation for their wildlife management fundings and the local folks got some compensation for their stomachs...

Well, thats what happens when you travel to another country to kill an animal that wasn't bothering you in the first place:rolleyes:

knuckleduster that reply says you do not understand anything about elephants and elephant management. I suggest you read MAHOHBOH by Ron Thomson.

FYI Ron Thomson was a game warden in various African countries/parks for 35 years; some of the biggest parks in Africa.

Without controlling elephant numbers they devastate the forest. At one time the various African countries used cropping to remove the excess animals, a senseless waste really. Enlightened people realized that since the excess animals (hundreds every year) had to be killed anyway, then the people ought to benefit from it so certain countries implemented quotas and re-introduced elephant hunting. Today elephant cropping still occurs in some countries for often questionable motive: IE it is Gov't santioned poaching where corrupt officials get the ivory.

Zimbabwe is the best place to hunt elephant today and probably Tanzania second. Hunting elephants provides employment for thousands of native Africans, money for the safari and tourism industry, and the elephant has an economic value that makes protecting and managing it's numbers worth while.
