Elk calling. What works for you?

When it comes to Elk hunting how do you work ur call?

Do you just bugle or mostly cow call?

If you bugle mostly what is your goal, to locate or to call in and what time of day / how often do you do it depending on the season?

If you cow call mostly, how often and when do u start blowing more of a estrus ?

What do you do when using both?


Feel free to share any other elk hunting tips here as well.
 
In areas with lots of hunting pressure, hoochie mammas will scare off the elk because just about every new elk hunter has one, they worked great the first couple years they were out though and in areas with little hunting pressure.
 
Got a couple with this. Always claim , if they're horny enough, a car horn'll bring em in. :)

perfect for our place where close to no hunting pressure and a few tags only ....
 
bugle to locate them, then cow call with the odd bugle bounced off the trees for lone bulls. bugle to locate, then cow calls and go staight at him for herd bulls....ALWAYS KNOW WHAT THE WIND IS DOING...one wiff of you and he's gone
 
Often we will do some very easy bugling just to locate them. Then cow calling. I never call so aggressively to run off smaller bulls or freak them out. No need to sound like the big guy.
 
I have to change my stragagy depending on where I hunt.

The most challenging place I hunt is 1mile away from an elk farm and also has lots of hunting pressure. Those elk will not come into a call and don't call much themselves. With the farm elk bugling and chirping all the time as well as hunters bugling all day they just seem to ignore all the action. If you make one bad chirp or bugle you are totally busted, might as well pack up and move on. They know what a hoochie mama sounds like too so you better be good with a reed. Because of the farm elk they will not respond to anything that is further than 300yards away, good luck in bugling to locate. Never had one come bugling always come in silent expecting to find a hunter. Best to get totally hidden in the dark before sun up, hope that they are walking near by at first light, let out ONE tiny chirp and wait.


Remote elk off in the bush were there may not actually be a herd within a mile or more I bugel to locate then close the gap when I pin point them, always go to them until I am close then I stop calling and wait, only chirp when I feel it is absolutely necessary so they don't pinpoint me and play it by ear.
 
The heard we hunt, has been hunted for 50 years by some of the old timers in the area
They have got so smart that we have to go across the valley and watch as we send a hunter in and the elk sneak around the sides .
around our hunter . They will not come to calls . They send cows out first and wait out the hunter .
If they do show themselves it's from across the valley .
We have resorted to practicing religiously at 800-900 yards shots.
the bulls are there we see them on carmera.
