Elk hunt - what cartridge

300win, 300prc, 300rum, 7mm prc, 7mm back country, 6.8western, 6.5prc… more calibers then you could ask for. 7mm back country and 7mm prc and 6.8 western, would be my go to more then enough stopping power, lower kick if you don't shoot enough but aton of options.

I've used the 32 Special and mostly the 8x57.

Between the 300 and 325 take whichever you like best. A mature Bull is more like a Horse than a Deer.

I think I'd be taking a 7mm mag and shoot a guns worth of ammo before hand.
A 300 mag, 3006 or 280, but I wouldn't go below .284 if it was that much of a commitment.

I just booked a $12,000 elk hunt , ranges will be 450 at most ..
What would you take for a rifle / cartridge combo/ terrain is average hilly flat
Lots of tree cover so a shot elk could disappear quickly

Sounds like 223 , 6.5 range may be the way to go ?

or is it
Can't go wrong with 300 PRC. Amazing stopping power.

He's just trolling from the 223 hunting thread. He thinks they mean 223/6mm is better than big magnums, but they really just mean with the proper bullet it will kill just as dead under the correct circumstances, similar to how using a bow works

for a once in a life time hunt I would want a little extra, but I don't think he realize people hunt elk every year with over the counter tags just as someone out east hunts white tailed deer. It's just a run of the mill hunt in places they live so why not try a bow for elk or a smaller caliber and wait for the right opportunity since they come up often

Troll post or not I'd love to see the look on the faces of the outfitter and his guides when the hunter pulled a .223 out the morning of the hunt...HA.

Probably similar to if he pulled out a bow. He is going to need a broad side shot with the animals standing still but he won't have to be 60 yards and under so it's a bit of a win. It's easier getting a good shot at 150m than 40m

Dude. .223 and elk just don't mix.
That be8ng said, good bullet placement with a good premium bullet at a decent velocity will result in a dead elk almost every time.
Get yourself a good .30-06, not a .308, and if you reload, spend the money and get 180gr Nosler Partitons and get them going out the barrel at 2750fps and you will get your elk. DONT SHOOT PAST 400YDS !
There is an old addage that states:::
If you can get closer, get closer. And if you can get steadier, get steadier.
That has served me well over the years.
If you don't reload, spend the money and buy Federal Premium 180 Nosler Partiton ammo or the Barnes X ammo same bullet weight and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE !!

I use .308win or .300win mag on my elk hunts. Both have dropped elk without issues at that distance. Your outfitter/guide may have a minimum required calibre especially depending on area/province double check with them to be sure.
