Elk hunt with a 270wsm, help me settle on a bullet..edit, working it out

130gr TTSX if your gun likes it or 150gr Partitions if your gun likes them.
What do the outfitters recommend ?
I'm have no experience with the Barnes bullet in the wsm, but have always like their performance shared via hunting forums and you tube.
Nosler has performed well in the 300 winmag and the 243 so going out on the limb and suggesting it will do likewise in the 277wsm ;)
Man, you have boat loads of time to research and get your gun dialed in for this exciting hunt.

When that bull elk you have spent thousands of dollars on in standing hard quartering to or away from you you want the bullet that will penetrate like old hell and track straight. TSX or TTSX all the way.

Regardless of what you see and read on these forums perfect broadside- though the lungs - shots don't always present themselves. Sometimes it is take the hard shot or go home empty-handed. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

im a big fan of the Barnes tsx, but they are increasingly harder to find, my 270wsm loves the lighter bullets 130 grain accubonds and partitions it likes aswell anything under 140 gr, RL17 is what mine enjoys

Ive shot elk with the 140 accubonds and 150 ABLR. stick with the regular accubond. I found the long range version just to soft. Im gonna be running the 130 ttsx for the next hunt i think. But ive shot a handful of bulls with the 140 AB and hve never had an issue.

I would go with the Swift A Frame or the TTSX; My findings with the Accubond have been less than stellar; IMO they are just a glorified Ballistic Tip and not worth what Nosler charges for them.

I’d send the TTSX. They are an impressive bullet on real live animals. All of the rifles I’ve loaded them in so far seemed to have liked them as well, which is but unusual…. But who’s complaining. They are deadly on game!

I preferred the 140 gr AccuBond in my 270 WSM when I had it. Very accurate. The AccuBond is a great big game animal bullet, and my favourite overall, as it is easy to develop loads for, provides consistent accuracy, and on game performance, in every caliber I have used them in to date. It also like a little more jump to the lands...start with .100".
Have taken many elk with AccuBonds over the reasons, in different calibers and bullet weights.
The 150 gr Partition is also a great bullet and works very well. While not known for its accuracy, I have had good luck with the accuracy over the years, quite often getting MOA or better groups. The extra weight increases sectional density and improves penetration.
In the end, shoot what the rifle likes best, and gives you the utmost confidence in your rifle.
Barnes can be finicky...your rifle will either like them, or it won't. Period.

Just stay off that heavy shoulder bone with the smaller calibers and lighter bullets...they will not break the heaviest part of the shoulder bone and penetrate to the vitals with enough energy to provide sufficient tissue damage...if it makes it through that heavy bone.

Best of luck on your adventure!

I do not reload for my 270WSM as I found the Winchester Expedition 140 Accubonds make beautiful tight groups and so far do a good job on game. Most kills have been complete pass throughs even after hitting bone.

Only recovered a couple bullets, one from a facing shot that completely shattered the neck vertebrae and rolled under the hide, the other clipped the elbow on entry and again on the opposite side under the hide. I did not weigh either bullet but they obviously held together well.

I would run a Hammer Hunter. Probably the 124, but I see the 117 seems more popular.

Good luck on your hunt, have fun!

heretic you should not even write down something like that ...lol

the accubond fanboys choir may come after you ...

more seriously i do agree with you.

How would an ELD-X stand up to an Elk?

I'm asking because I don't know but I find them very accurate in my rifle.

As a cup and core bullet that's designed to expand at long ranges I would be concerned about close range or hitting bone. They claim it's good at both close and long shots but that sounds like overly optimistic marketing to me.

I use the 130 interbond in my 270win. Left a blood trail blind man could follow. My understanding is they're a bit tougher than the accubond, but I hear good things about those too.

That said, the 150 partition was the most accurate bullet I've ever loaded, so I would be very happy to use those too. I got the interbonds on clearance for half price and partitions were crazy expensive locally at the time so I switched away from them. (Only to come back around, I'm loading 140 parts in my 7mm08 now lol)
