Elk Hunting in Alberta - Info Required

A bow is still considered a 'weapon' in the regs. I am fairly certain that if you are caught on an ATV with a bow (or crossbow) you could get charged by F&D. If I am mistaken please correct me

ATV restrictions, if applicable, are during big game rifle season only.

I don't want to nit pick but the regulations around ATV's and archery gear are clear. Sorry to side track the thread, but if anyone is caught in the zones mentioned below before noon, on an ATV, with a bow they will be charged. Cut and pasted right from the regs.....

Hunting with Motorized Vehicles

It is unlawful to

discharge a weapon at antelope from within 46 m (50 yards) of a vehicle;
use motorized travel within Willmore Wilderness Park;

and
carry a weapon (see definition) on an OHV between 1 hour before sunrise and the following noon during an open season for big game* on public land in the following WMUs: 102-166, 200-260, 300-351, 354-360, 400-446, 507, 508, 514, 521, 522, 526 and 841. This does not apply to a person who is traveling on a direct route to or from a location accessible by vehicles designed for highway travel and his or her isolated campsite, and the weapons and ammunition are carried out of view in separate locked containers (and remain locked during the trip).
Also, the restriction does not apply in a WMU when the only big game season open is a spring black bear season.
* this restriction applies to all hunters (including bird game hunters).

Weapon - a firearm or any other device that propels a projectile by means of an explosion, spring, air, gas, string, wire or elastic material or any combination of those things.

Alberta hunt.

Best chance to at least see an elk are if you can get permission to hunt agricultural/bush areas (not easy). September can be high 20 degrees so think like an elk and hunt the timber. Watching clearings early and late is good idea. November can be good as weather will be cold (or real cold) and whitetail and Muley will be more active. I'm a BC resident and have hunted with my Alberta buddies in september and november the last six years and finally connected last year. We always manage to get one or two every year but the odds are low, but thats elk hunting. Then again, an Ontario fellow came out one year and got two bulls his first time ever! Here's pic of mine. I'd gladly go another six years for a chance at another like him. Good luck to you guys. If you at least see an elk, you will be addicted. Hearing your first bugle will make the hair on your neck stand up. In the meantime, read books and watch videos on elk. They aint whitetails.
Cheers
Geoff

One in Alberta and one in BC?....Right?

Which brings me to my next point. Unlike Ontario, party hunting in Alberta is illegal. You are not allowed to fill someone elses tag (special circumstances apply).
