Elk Hunting

Hello i bought a 7-08 last summer woundering if that bullet is big enough to kill and elk or do i need something like a 300 or 30-06.

I've used a 7mm-08 on elk, deer, and moose. With the correct bullet you can hunt any big game in North America. FWIW - dan

It's all about shot placement as well. If you use a bonded bullet or a Barnes bullet they'll hold up a lot better on larger game I don't see why a 150-180 bullet wouldn't do the job.

Seriously elks are pussies. My 300 win mag is probably not over gun but 7mm08 is probably as smallest cartage I would use on an elk. It's nice to have the extra whoop ass to make them drop in their tracks.

While my personal minimum for elk is .30 cal and I prefer .338, I don't see why the 7mm-08 wouldn't work just fine. Use a good bullet like the Barnes TSX in a heavier weight and it should do the trick. Tons of elk have been shot with cartridges like the 7mm-08, 7x57, 7x64, etc.
