Holy Crap, driving east on Highway 7 this morning just 10 minutes from Tweed 3 Elk on the side of the road......wish I had my camera.

This is my first sighting Elk in Ontario and how sweet it was.

I've seen them there before too, I did a double take and sure enough they were elk. I will be driving by there again today will have to take a look. Maybe someone has them on a farm though?

Apparently the Bancroft herd has about 500 now. Some farmers were complaining about crop damage, and they're talking about having a controlled hunt. Probably will be natives only though.

And MNR may put up an electric fence on a farmers oat field, was in the Ont Out Doors Mag this month.

I was camping by Bancroft this summer, there were trackings all along the dirt road. The fellow down the road saw a few as well.

Personally, I don't want to see a hunt. If there is a real problem with 500 elk, how are we going to ever get beyond that number?

At the very most, they should transfer some to the other herds that aren't fairing out so well.

Hey I'm a Native Bancroft-onian, will I get a chance :slap: thought not :(

Elk are notorious wanderers.

Saw one small cow elk roughly 30 miles north of ottawa last year in a tiny opening. Not sure if there were others

I was in the Bancroft area for the deer hunt this past fall and took a drive on the Sunday at the end of the first week.Saw a huge bull elk at the side of the Weslemkoon Lake Rd.Stopped the truck and watched him for about 5 minutes.Wish I had a camera. He didn't care if I was there or not. Cheers Bac4

I saw a couple of young elk a few km from Gooderham Ontario about five (?) years ago. On first glance I thought they were some kind of escaped fallow deer or something. They both had tags on their ears. I was later told that elk had been introduced in the area which explained things.

I am glad I found that out before the deer season because in several previous decades of hunting there, that species was naturally not on my radar - just moose and whitetail.
