Im Trying to go to Alberta or BC for Elk with rifles, and another deer and black bear opportunistic. My wife and I. I don't want a budget hunt just to kill any elk. But neither do I have the money to pay for a SCI gold medal. A nice respectable 6x6. From what I've figured out the Kootenay region of BC has a good population and niced size elk around 300" B&C. We are young and have no disabilities. We follow hounds around hunting all year round, so we put some miles on foot consistently. Airfare out to BC is going to be 2k (500 a piece each way) on top of a hunt price. Call me nuts but 6k each is all I can spend.

Right this second Im looking at Tom Kotlarz, Silent Mountain Outfitters north of cranbrook.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not going to pay USD! That drives me nuts, deal breaker.

Personally wouldn't recommend the area you have suggested, it is not knowing for large numbers of elk.
Would look into some of the outfitters more south, fernie area maybe. Your best bet to see more animals
would be northern B.C.. The southern parts of B.C. have low ungulate numbers right now.
Who ever you look at get lots of references both successful and un successful.

I must have been reading old study's about Kooteney region then, my understanding was that was a large herd and decent sized bulls. I was looking up unit 7 as well south of Dawson creek but figured the further north the smaller antlers.

I'll take a look at that link Freddy. Thanks

Okay is somebody pulling my leg cause cranbrooks right beside fernie and still kootenay region??

silent mountain outfitters is closer to Golden then cranbrook, If you were flying in the airport is in cranbrook.
He may get elk not saying he doesn't just not the area I would pick to hunt them. You could send a PM if
you have any specific questions I will try and help.

I'm glad I live in southern Alberta now were I can fill my Elk tags without to much cost. Got 2 Elk in one day on the Alberta/Sask border this year. My brother and I also got our 4 deer in the next 2 days in the same area.

69firebird,
I have hunted twice with Steven Leuenberger of Ram Creek Outfitters. They are located in between Fernie, and Cranbrook, BC... closer to Fernie. I cannot say enough about Ram Creek. The staff that Steven employ's are all hard working, from the guides to the camp staff. Their horses are sound, and very easy to ride. The first time I hunted with Steven was Sept 2012. There was four of us on the Elk hunt. Two of us where successful, and fortunately I was one of them. My bull scored around 310", and the other bull scored around 330". For my second hunt, I hunted Mule deer in 2014. Again I was successful. It was a great hunt.
I came away from my second hunt with the same opinion as I did from my first hunt... Completely satisfied.

Whether you are hunting Elk or Mule deer with Ram Creek, you have to be in really good shape. Your cardio, and your leg strength are extremely important. You will need a very good pair of boots. Oh yah... you better not be afraid of heights.

PM me if you have any other questions

I would say look up in NE BC for an elk hunt and maybe able to tie in a WT and BB. Another good source of info would be the APOS website for outfitters n Alberta. I do not know the BC Outfitters Assoc..- just Google it.

Check their references, ask about issues with residents hunters. Conflict with residents is a commonly heard complaint.

I had a look at their site, looks good except for the US pricing. I'm on board with the OP, US pricing is a turn off.

NE BC is too expensive. Almost double. Been looking in Alberta too but its mostly ranch styles hunts, I prefer BC style mountain hunting. Been talking to Steven. With most outfitters in BC I'm finding the USD thing isn't an issue.

Whatsan Guide and outfitters, Ken Robins?? West Kootenays. Talked with him awhile on the phone, 3 guys out in BC recommended him they didn't hunt with him, they knew him or his guides. Supposed to be some monster bulls in that area.

edit- Grizzly Basin wouldn't match price on par so it was an easy scratch off my list.
